Henry Peirse
Henry Peirse (1695 – 2 October 1759) of Bedale in Yorkshire was an English landowner and Member of Parliament. He was born the eldest son of John Peirse of Lazenby, Yorkshire and inherited the manor of Bedale from his grandfather. In the 1730s he transformed the old manor house into a Palladian mansion, renaming it Bedale Hall. He served as a Member of Parliament for Northallerton in Yorkshire between 1713 and 1715 and between 1722 and 1754. Henry Peirse (younger)
Henry Peirse (c. 1754–1824) was a British politician who sat in the House of Commons for 50 years from 1774 to 1824. Early life Peirce was the son of Henry Peirse MP of Bedale, Yorkshire and his wife Anne Johnson. His father died in 1759 and he inherited the Bedale Hall estate. He was educated at Eton College from 1764 to 1770 and was admitted at Pembroke College, Cambridge on 3 July 1771, aged 17. He undertook a Grand Tour which included Rome, Naples, Venice and Paris. While in Rome in 1775 his portrait was painted by Pompeo Batoni. He married Hon. Charlotte Grace Monson, daughter of John Monson, 3rd Baron Monson on 16 August 1777. Bedale Hall underwent some transformation under Pierce, and about 1777 he enlarged the house by incorporating into it an old Inn, so that the house became attached to the town houses on the west side of the Market Place. William Smelt (politician)
William Smelt (10 January 1690 - 14 September 1755) was an English Member of Parliament. Life He was the second son of Leonard Smelt of Kirkby Fleetham - his elder brother Leonard was disinherited since their father had run through the family estate. He succeeded Leonard Jr as MP for Northallerton from 1740 until 1745, when he stood down and accepted a post as receiver general of casual revenue for Barbados from 1745 to his death. He sold the family interest in the Northallerton seat to Henry Lascelles. He was buried in the family vault in the chantry chapel in the north aisle of Kirkby Fleetham church. Edwin Lascelles, 1st Baron Harewood
Edwin Lascelles, 1st Baron Harewood (1713 – 25 January 1795) was a wealthy West Indian plantation owner and enslaver who was of English ancestry. Early life He was born in Barbados, the elder son of Henry Lascelles (1690–1753) and Mary Carter. His father split the family fortune, leaving Edwin's younger brother Daniel as head of the business, and raised Edwin as a lord of the manor over their English estates. He was educated at Trinity College, Cambridge and on a European Grand Tour. Military and political service He fought against the Jacobites (1745), and entered Parliament as MP for Scarborough from 1744 to 1754. He was later MP for Yorkshire from 1761 to 1780 and for Northallerton from 1780 to 1790 (inheriting the latter seat from his father Henry and his brother Daniel).
