Henry Peek
Sir Henry William Peek, 1st Baronet DL (26 February 1825 – 26 August 1898) was an importer of spices, tea and other groceries, philanthropist and Conservative Member of Parliament (MP). Parents, marriage and residence Peek was born in 1825 to James Peek of Watcombe, Torquay, Devon and Elizabeth, his first wife. He married in 1848, Margaret Maria (d 1884), second daughter of William Edgar of Clapham Common, Surrey. Wimbledon House, Wimbledon Village stood near the west end of its short High Street, about west of the parish church. It was probably built about the middle of the 18th century. It housed Louis Joseph, Prince of Condé in some of his final years (died 1818), MP Joseph Marryat then after a time Peek. It was demolished about 1900-1902 passing to a building syndicate. 1868 United Kingdom General Election
The 1868 United Kingdom general election was the first after passage of the Reform Act 1867, which enfranchised many male householders, thus greatly increasing the number of men who could vote in elections in the United Kingdom. It was the first election held in the United Kingdom in which more than a million votes were cast; nearly triple the number of votes were cast compared to the previous election of 1865. The result saw the Liberals, led by William Gladstone, again increase their majority over Benjamin Disraeli's Conservatives ( see 1865 election) to more than 100 seats. This was the last general election at which all the seats were taken by only the two leading parties, although the parties at the time were loose coalitions and party affiliation was not listed on registration papers. Cuthbert Peek
Sir Cuthbert Edgar Peek, 2nd Baronet (30 January 1855 – 6 July 1901) was an astronomer and meteorologist, and took part in activities of several learned societies. Life Peek was born at Wimbledon, London on 30 Jan. 1855, the only child of Sir Henry William Peek, 1st Baronet, of Wimbledon House, Wimbledon, Surrey, a partner in the firm of Messrs. Peek Brothers & Co., colonial merchants, of East Cheap, and MP for East Surrey from 1868 to 1884. His mother was Margaret Maria, second daughter of William Edgar of Eagle House, Clapham Common. Cuthbert, after education at Eton College, entered Pembroke College, Cambridge, in 1876 and graduated BA in 1880, proceeding MA in 1884. Sir John Ellis, 1st Baronet
Sir John Whittaker Ellis, 1st Baronet (25 January 1829 – 20 September 1912) was Lord Mayor of London for 1881–82, in which year he was made a baronet. Two years later he was elected and re-elected Conservative Member of Parliament for eight years, not seeking further re-election. A very prosperous banking executive, estate agent and auctioneer among his legacies was a fire station at Byfleet, Surrey; he sat on the boards of various hospitals and his wife was also engaged in charities. Biography Born in 1829, Ellis was the fifth son of Joseph Ellis, owner of the Star and Garter Hotel in Petersham, Richmond, Surrey (now London) from 1830 to 1847. He set up his family in Byfleet, living for many years at Petersham House/Place (built in High Road 1859, its surviving front block is 15 High Road, used as Lloyds Bank and a risk consultancy). Sir Trevor Lawrence, 2nd Baronet
Sir James John Trevor Lawrence, 2nd Baronet, (30 December 1831 – 22 December 1913) was an English surgeon, horticulturalist, and art collector. He later became a Conservative Member of Parliament (MP) for 17 years, retiring to become treasurer of St Bartholomew's Hospital where he founded the Lawrence Scholarship and contributed to the King Edward's Hospital Fund. During his time as MP he became president of the Royal Horticultural Society serving 28 years until death, overseeing a growth in interest in membership and horticulture in general across the British Empire. He is the inspiration for a hybrid Aril Iris, ''Iris Sir Trevor Lawrence'' and a genus of orchids, ''Trevoria''. The society also founded a gold medal in his honour.
