Counts Of Ligny
The Lords of Ligny, later Counts of Ligny, ruled the fief of Ligny-en-Barrois during the Middle Ages. In 1240, the seigniory of Ligny-en-Barrois was given by Henry II of Bar as the dowry of his daughter Marguerite, who married Henry V of Luxemburg (Henry I of Ligny). Henry bestowed it upon his younger son Waleran in 1281, who was killed at the Battle of Worringen in 1288. Waleran II, Lord Of Ligny
Waleran II of Luxembourg, Lord of Ligny (french: links=no, Waléran II de Luxembourg II; german: links=no, Walram II. von Ligny; died 1354), was a French nobleman and member of the House of Luxembourg. He was Lord of Beauvoir, Roussy and Ligny. He was a son of Waleran I and his wife, Joan of Beauvoir. Walram initially inherited the castles of Beauvoir and Roussy from his mother. After the death of his brother Henry II in 1303, he also inherited his father's Lordship of Ligny. He died in 1354 and was buried in the church of Notre-Dame in Cambrai. He was married to Guyotte (died 1338), the heiress of the Burgraviate of Lille. Ligny-en-Barrois () is a commune in the Meuse department in Grand Est in north-eastern France. The town is in the arrondissement of Bar-le-Duc, beside the canal that links the rivers Rhine and Marne, fifteen kilometres to the south east of Bar-le-Duc: it is the administrative seat of the canton Ligny-en-Barrois. The Battle of Worringen was fought on 5 June 1288 near the town of Worringen (also spelled Woeringen), which is now the northernmost borough of Cologne. It was the decisive battle of the War of the Limburg Succession, fought for the possession of the Duchy of Limburg between on one side the Archbishop Siegfried II of Cologne and Count Henry VI of Luxembourg, and on the other side, Duke John I of Brabant. It was one of the largest battles in Europe in the Middle Ages.
