Henry House (Bennington, Vermont)
The Henry House, also known as William Henry House, is a historic house at 1338 Murphy Road in Bennington, Vermont. Built in 1769 and extensively reworked in 1798, it is one of Vermont's oldest surviving houses, and an important example of evolutionary architecture in the state during the 18th century. Now a wedding and events venue, it was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1988. Description and history The Henry House is located outside the village of North Bennington, Vermont, on the south side of the Walloomsac River, just south of the Burt Henry Covered Bridge. It is set on of meadow, maple and pine. The main block of the house is a -story wood-frame structure, with gabled roof and clapboard siding. Extending to the north and rear are ells, one of which appears to be a porch that was enclosed at a relatively early date. North Bennington, Vermont
North Bennington is an incorporated village in the town of Bennington in Bennington County, Vermont, United States. The population was 1,716 at the 2020 census. The North Bennington Historic District was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1980. The district covers an area of and includes 164 contributing buildings and two contributing sites. It is home to the Park-McCullough Historic House, a well-preserved, 35-room, Victorian country house. The H.C. White site, at the southern end of the village, was added to the Register in 2009. The Burt Henry Covered Bridge, also known as the Henry Covered Bridge or just the Henry Bridge, is a covered bridge that spans the Walloomsac River near Bennington, Vermont. William Henry (congressman)
William Henry (March 22, 1788 – April 16, 1861) was an American manufacturer and banker. He represented Vermont in the United States House of Representatives from 1847 to 1851. Biography Henry was born on March 22, 1788, in Charlestown, Sullivan County, New Hampshire. He attended the common schools and then engaged in business in Chester, Vermont. He married Fanny Goodhue. He engaged in manufacturing in Vermont, New York, and Jaffery, New Hampshire. When he moved to Bellows Falls, Vermont, in 1831, he engaged in banking as well. He served as a member of the Vermont House of Representatives in 1834; a member of the Vermont Senate in 1836; a delegate from Vermont in 1839 to the Whig National Convention at Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, serving as (member, Committee on Permanent Organization; member, Balloting Committee; member, Committee to Notify Nominees); and Presidential Elector for Vermont in 1840.
