Henry Herbert (Parliamentarian)
Henry Herbert (born 1617) was a Welsh politician who sat in the House of Commons of England between 1642 and 1654. He fought in the Parliamentary army in the English Civil War. Herbert was the son of William Herbert of Coldbrook. He matriculated at Magdalen Hall, Oxford on 10 October 1634 and entered Middle Temple in the same year. In March 1642, Herbert was elected Member of Parliament for Monmouthshire in the Long Parliament. He was a colonel in the Parliamentary army and took Cardiff in September 1645 and then Swansea. He was one of the parliamentary commissioners for Monmouthshire in 1646 and took a prominent role in the Commonwealth. He was appointed a member of High Court of Justice on 25 June 1651. He was a member of 4th Council of State from 19 November 1651 to November 1652 and was placed on the committee of law and the committee for preserving of timber on 2 December 1651. Henry William Herbert (7 April 1807 – 17 May 1858), pen name Frank Forester, was a British-born American novelist, poet, historian, illustrator, journalist and writer on sport. Starr writes that "as a classical scholar he had few equals in the United States . . . his knowledge of English history and literature was extensive; he was a pen-and-ink artist of marked ability; as a sportsman he was unsurpassed; his pupils idolized him." Biography The eldest son of William Herbert, Dean of Manchester (himself the son of Henry Herbert, 1st Earl of Carnarvon), Herbert was born in London. Herbert was educated at Eton College and at Caius College, Cambridge, where he graduated BA in 1830. Major Henry Arthur Herbert (1840 – 14 August 1901) was an Irish landowner and a politician in the Parliament of the United Kingdom. Background He was the son of Henry Arthur Herbert (1815–1866), and his wife the Scottish watercolourist Mary Balfour Herbert. His great-grandfather was Henry Arthur Herbert (1756–1821), MP for Kerry from 1806 to 1813. Henry's great-grandmother, Anne, was the daughter of a 'Jamaican of colour' called Elizabeth Augier. He inherited his father's Muckross House and estate, near Killarney. In the 1870s this estate amounted to over 47,000 acres in County Kerry. Under Henry Arthur Herbert's reign the fortunes of the Muckross estate declined until it became insolvent in 1897. A year later, the estate was forfeited to the Standard Life Assurance Company and the long association of the Herbert family with Muckross House was ended. Colonel Henry Arthur Herbert PC (1815 – 26 February 1866), was an Anglo-Irish politician in the Parliament of the United Kingdom. Political career Herbert was a Member of Parliament (MP) for Kerry from 1847 until his death, and served as Chief Secretary for Ireland from 1857 to 1858. He was appointed Lord Lieutenant and Custos Rotulorum of Kerry in 1853. In Dublin, Herbert was a member of the Kildare Street Club. Family Herbert was the grandson of Henry Arthur Herbert (1756–1821), MP for Kerry from 1806 to 1813 and the son of Charles John Herbert (1785-1823) and Louisa Anne (née Middleton) (1796-1828), who was the daughter of Nathaniel Middleton. Henry Arthur Herbert the elder (c. 1756 – 21 June 1821, Westminster) was a major landowner in County Kerry, Ireland, and a member of the Parliament of the United Kingdom. He was educated at St John's College, Cambridge and studied law at the Middle Temple. Henry Arthur was the son of Thomas Herbert, who had amassed a fortune by exploiting the copper mines of the ''Muckross Peninsula'' and ''Ross Island'' areas of the Lakes of Killarney in Kerry. The Herbert family had originally come from Montgomeryshire in Wales in the 17th century. In 1770 the Herberts inherited the large estates of the MacCarthy family in the Killarney area. Henry Herbert (c. 1879 – 20 February 1947) was an English film, stage actor and producer, who became well known in the United States. Biography Herbert appears to have commenced his early career with Ben Greet's Company, and with Sir Frank Benson; for some years he managed Benson's No.2 Company on tour, as well as playing leading parts. On 22 April 1911, he directed Basil Rathbone in his first appearance on stage at the Theatre Royal, Ipswich, as Hortensio in ''The Taming of the Shrew''. Master Herbert (born 1822) was an English child actor. 'Master Herbert' also known as the 'Infant Roscius' Henry Herbert (1822-?) born 22 December, in Wisbech, the son of John Herbert (a member of Wisbech Harmonic Society). He was taken to the theatre at the age of two. The family moved to London, where he watched Edmund Kean perform. The family relocated to Reading, where he saw another juvenile Roscius, Master Grossmith perform. Sir Henry Herbert (baptized 7 July 1594 – 27 April 1673) was Master of the Revels to both King Charles I and King Charles II, as well as a politician during both reigns. Biography Baptised in July 1594, Herbert was the sixth son of Magdelen Herbert and Richard Herbert of Montgomery Castle. Richard was a younger brother of Edward Herbert, 1st Baron Herbert of Cherbury and the poet George Herbert, both former members of the Parliament of England, and older brother of naval officer Thomas Herbert. Their family was related to the Herbert Earls of Pembroke, prominent figures in English government and society throughout the Jacobean and Caroline era.
