Henry Formhals
Henry Martin Formhals (August 2, 1908 – May 12, 1981) was an American cartoonist best known for his work on the comic strip '' Freckles and His Friends''. Biography Born in Los Angeles, Formhals was a carrier for the ''Pasadena Star-News'', and he graduated from Pasadena High School. He studied art at the Stickney Art School in Los Angeles and was employed for several years as a commercial artist before he began working on comic strips. Formhals was an assistant on Merrill Blosser's ''Freckles and His Friends'' beginning in 1935. In 1932, Freckles wore long trousers when he entered Shadyside High School and met his Friends. The Crumpet Hut crowd eventually included his best buddy Lard Smith, Bazoo Botts, Hilda, perky Daisy and the inventive intellectual Nutty Cook. Romance entered the strip after Freckles met June Wayman, a character introduced in 1937. The ''Pasadena Star-News'' is a paid local daily newspaper for the greater Pasadena, California area. The Pasadena ''Star-News'' is a member of Southern California News Group (formerly the Los Angeles Newspaper Group), since 1996. Pasadena High School (PHS) is a public high school in Pasadena, California. It is one of four high schools in the Pasadena Unified School District. History The school was first established as a district school in 1884 and became Pasadena High School in 1891. In 1928, the school merged into Pasadena Junior College and operated as a four-year school, grades 11, 12, 13 and 14. Pasadena realigned its 6-4-4 school system in 1954 with Pasadena High School regaining its separate identity. PHS, however, shared the Pasadena City College Colorado Boulevard campus through the graduating class of 1960 when PHS moved to its present campus on Sierra Madre Boulevard at Washington Boulevard. Merrill Blosser
Merrill Blosser (May 28, 1892 – January 9, 1983) was an American cartoonist, the creator of the comic strip ''Freckles and His Friends'', which had a long run (1915–1971). Although his strip was set in the small town of Shadyside, it was obviously based on Blosser's hometown of Nappanee, Indiana, since Blosser often referenced real Nappanee locations, such as Johnson's Drug Store. Early life Growing up in Nappanee, where he was born, Blosser was encouraged by his parents to take drawing lessons, and he signed up for Charles N. Landon's correspondence course. Six successful cartoonists lived in Nappanee as children, including Fred Neher (''Life’s Like That'') and Bill Holman (''Smokey Stover''). The Sunday comics or Sunday strip is the comic strip section carried in most western newspapers, almost always in color. Many newspaper readers called this section the Sunday funnies, the funny papers or simply the funnies. The first US newspaper comic strips appeared in the late 19th century, closely allied with the invention of the color press. Jimmy Swinnerton's ''The Little Bears'' introduced sequential art and recurring characters in William Randolph Hearst's ''San Francisco Examiner''. A daily strip is a newspaper comic strip format, appearing on weekdays, Monday through Saturday, as contrasted with a Sunday strip, which typically only appears on Sundays. Bud Fisher's ''Mutt and Jeff'' is commonly regarded as the first daily comic strip, launched November 15, 1907 (under its initial title, ''A. Mutt'') on the sports pages of the ''San Francisco Chronicle''. The featured character had previously appeared in sports cartoons by Fisher but was unnamed. Fisher had approached his editor, John P. Young, about doing a regular strip as early as 1905 but was turned down. According to Fisher, Young told him, "It would take up too much room, and readers are used to reading down the page, and not horizontally."
