Sir Henry Burns (born 1951), known generally as Harry Burns, is the professor of global public health, University of Strathclyde, having been the Chief Medical Officer for Scotland from September 2005 to April 2014. He has become known for his work to address health inequalities. He is a member of the Council of Economic Advisers in Scotland. Early life Henry Burns was born in Barrhead, East Renfrewshire in 1951 and was educated at St. Aloysius College, a private school in Glasgow. In 1974 he graduated in medicine from the University of Glasgow. Career Burns initially pursued a career in general surgery, and for five years he was a consultant surgeon at the Glasgow Royal Infirmary. He took up a managerial role as the medical director of the Glasgow Royal Infirmary. He completed a master's degree in Public Health in 1990.
