Henry Briggs (mathematician)
Henry Briggs (1 February 1561 – 26 January 1630) was an English mathematician notable for changing the original logarithms invented by John Napier into common (base 10) logarithms, which are sometimes known as Briggsian logarithms in his honour. The specific algorithm for long division in modern use was introduced by Briggs 1600 AD. Briggs was a committed Puritan and an influential professor in his time. Personal life Briggs was born at Daisy Bank, Sowerby Bridge, near Halifax, in Yorkshire, England. After studying Latin and Greek at a local grammar school, he entered St John's College, Cambridge, in 1577, and graduated in 1581. In 1588, he was elected a Fellow of St John's. In 1592, he was made reader of the physical lecture founded by Thomas Linacre; he also read some of the mathematical lectures. Henry Perronet Briggs
Henry Perronet Briggs RA (1793 – 18 January 1844) was an English painter of portraits and historical scenes. Life Briggs was born at Walworth, County Durham, the son of a post office official. His cousin was Amelia Opie (née Alderson), the wife of artist John Opie (whose portrait was later painted by Briggs). While still at school at Epping he sent two engravings to the ''Gentleman's Magazine'' and in 1811 entered as a student at the Royal Academy, London, where he began to exhibit in 1814. From that time onwards until his death he was a constant exhibitor at the annual exhibitions of the Academy, as well as the British Institution, his paintings being for the most part historical in subject. After his election as a Royal Academician (RA) in 1832 he devoted his attention almost exclusively to portraiture. Briggs died, of tuberculosis in London on 18 January 1844, aged 50/51. Henry George Briggs
Henry George Briggs (1824–1872) was an English merchant, traveller, and orientalist. Life Henry George Briggs, son of Henry Briggs, was born in Bombay on 20 October 1824. He travelled in South Africa in 1843; in China in 1845; and settled in Bombay in 1846, in the office of Briggs & Co. He served in the Bombay Secretariat. He went to Karachi: edited, in 1854, the ''Sindian'', and, in 1855, the Sind ''Kossid'', both long since defunct. He became, in 1856, Assistant Secretary at Bombay to the Great Indian Peninsula Railway. He was Secretary to the Bombay Municipality, 1860–1862. He was a merchant and agent at Bombay and Hingolee in 1863. His firm failed in the share mania of 1865; he travelled in Gujarat, and settled in Calcutta, entering the Public Works Department there. Henry Shaw Briggs
Henry Shaw Briggs (August 1, 1824 – September 23, 1887) was brigadier general in the Union Army during the American Civil War. During the war, Briggs served as a captain with the 8th Regiment Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry. He was the colonel and first commander of the 10th Regiment Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry. After suffering serious wounds during the Battle of Fair Oaks in 1862, Briggs was promoted to brigadier general and served primarily administrative commands in Baltimore, Washington, D.C. and Alexandria, Virginia. Sir Henry Briggs (17 March 1844 – 8 June 1919), Australian politician, was a Member of the Western Australian Legislative Council for 23 years, and its President for 13 years. Life Born in Kettering, Northamptonshire, England on 17 March 1844, Henry Briggs was the son of shoemaker George Briggs and Sarah née Tibbutt. He was educated at Kettering National School and later at St. Mark's College in Chelsea where he was a Queen's Scholar.
