Henry Bridges (clockmaker)
Henry Bridges (1697–1754) was a carpenter, showman and clockmaker of Waltham Abbey, England. He was father of James Bridges, architect and engineer. Henry is famous as the builder of the giant clock, the Microcosm. He is buried with his wife in the churchyard of Waltham Abbey, the largest monument there, which was restored several years ago by a local clockmaker. The clock was on tour from 1733 until 1775 and was seen by thousands of people in England, Ireland, Scotland, The West Indies, and North America including George Washington and Richard Edgeworth who wrote an account of it in his memoirs. All trace has been lost of it until found in the 1920s in Paris. Henry Bridges, Jr. (December 2, 1915, Paris, Texas – July 27, 1986, Los Angeles) was an American jazz saxophonist. Earlier jazz reference books speculated that he was born in Oklahoma City circa 1908, but later work examining social security records indicates that he was probably born in 1915 in Texas.Rye, Howard. While living in Oklahoma he worked with Don Byas and with Charlie Christian for several years in territory bands, then worked in the bands of Alphonso Trent, Anna Mae Winburn, and Leslie Sheffield. Shortly after this he joined the US military and led a band which performed in the US and the European theater. Henry Styles Bridges (September 9, 1898November 26, 1961) was an American teacher, editor, and Republican Party politician from Concord, New Hampshire. He served one term as the 63rd governor of New Hampshire before a twenty-four-year career in the United States Senate. Early life and career Bridges was born in West Pembroke, Maine, the son of Alina Roxanna (Fisher) and Earle Leopold Bridges. He attended the public schools in Maine. Bridges attended the University of Maine at Orono until 1918. From 1918 he held a variety of jobs, including teaching, newspaper editing, business and state government. He was an instructor at Sanderson Academy, Ashfield, Massachusetts from 1918 to 1919. He was a member of the extension staff of the University of New Hampshire at Durham from 1921 until 1922.
