Henning Sjöström
Henning Elof Sjöström (13 May 1922, Burträsk – 16 October 2011) was a Swedish defense attorney, and regarded as Sweden's first celebrity lawyer due to his high-profile cases. Sjöström was the attorney for Kurt Haijby during the Haijby affair, in which Haijby was accused of blackmailing Swedish King Gustav V. He was also known for the through the trial of the "neurosedyn children" 1964–1968 and for having defended Gunnar Bengtsson after the Söderhamn courthouse murders in 1971 and Carl-Eric Björkegren Carl-Eric Björkegren (born 9 October 1920 – disappeared 2 June 1994) was a Swedish director, art collector, and businessman. The Haijby scandal (''Haijbyaffären'') was a political affair in Sweden in the 1950s, involving the conviction and imprisonment of restaurateur Kurt Haijby for the supposed blackmail of King Gustaf V. Haijby claimed that he had a secret homosexual relationship with the King in the 1930s. Background Kurt Haijby was born in Stockholm in 1897 as Kurt Johansson, and died there in 1965. His father was a wine merchant and a fishmonger by appointment to the Royal Court. In 1912, while selling "majblomma" charity pins, Kurt and another boy scout were granted an audience with King Gustaf V of Sweden. Johansson later worked as a waiter, clerk, actor, and illusionist. Burträsk is a locality situated in Skellefteå Municipality, Västerbotten County, Sweden with 1,575 inhabitants in 2010. It is notable as the only place where Västerbotten cheese is made. Gustav V
Gustaf V (Oscar Gustaf Adolf; 16 June 1858 – 29 October 1950) was King of Sweden from 8 December 1907 until his death in 1950. He was the eldest son of King Oscar II of Sweden and Sophia of Nassau, a half-sister of Adolphe, Grand Duke of Luxembourg. Reigning from the death of his father Oscar II in 1907 to his own death nearly 43 years later, he holds the record of being the oldest monarch of Sweden and the third-longest rule, after Magnus IV (1319–1364) and Carl XVI Gustaf (1973–present). Thalidomide Scandal
In the late 1950s and early 1960s and into the 80s, the use of thalidomide in 46 countries by women who were pregnant or who subsequently became pregnant resulted in the "biggest man-made medical disaster ever," with more than 10,000 children born with a range of severe deformities, such as phocomelia, as well as thousands of miscarriages. Thalidomide was introduced in 1953 as a tranquilizer, and was later marketed by the German pharmaceutical company Grünenthal GmbH, Chemie Grünenthal under the trade name Contergan as a medication for anxiety, insomnia, trouble sleeping, "tension", and morning sickness. It was introduced as a sedative and medication for morning sickness without having been tested on pregnant women. 1971 Söderhamn Courthouse Murders
The 1971 Söderhamn courthouse murders ( sv, Tingshusmorden) was a mass killing in Sweden when a 61-year-old homeowner on 1 March 1971 shot and killed four people during a preliminary hearing in a civil case in the Southeastern Hälsingland courthouse in Söderhamn. The shooting was the epilogue to a five-year-old lawsuit. Homeowner Gunnar Bengtsson had fallen in love with a woman who also moved in with him. The couple got engaged at the end of 1965, but when there was talk of marriage, the woman pulled out. Bengtsson had lent money to the woman without a receipt, as they intended to marry. When Bengtsson began to suspect trouble, he took jewelry as security for the money he lent her. Both the assize court, the court of appeal and the supreme court sentenced him to return the jewelry and pay the woman's legal costs. Carl-Eric Björkegren
Carl-Eric Björkegren (born 9 October 1920 – disappeared 2 June 1994) was a Swedish director, art collector, and businessman. After a successful career within the steel conglomerate Sandvik AB, he transitioned into the financial industry - leveraging and acquiring real estate, stocks, and art. For many, he was a symbol of the 1980s boom economy. Björkegren was, for a period, one of Sweden's wealthiest individuals and possessed what was described as Sweden's finest private art collection. In the early 1990s, his empire crumbled, and he eventually declared personal bankruptcy with 1.3 billion Swedish kronor in debt. In 1994, he disappeared without a trace. On 11 November 2005, Björkegren was declared dead in absentia by the Stockholm District Court.
