Hendrick Hansen
Hendrick Hansen (February 26, 1665 – February 17, 1724) was the fifth Mayor of Albany, New York. Early life Hendrick Hansen was born on February 26, 1665, in Albany. He was the son of Hans Hendrickse, a Beverwyck trader, and Eva Gillis de Meyer Hansen. Career Hansen was a prominent landholder and trader who inherited substantial property from his father. In 1693, he was elected as Assistant Alderman to the Albany City Council, representing the Third Ward. In 1695, he was elected Alderman and served until 1698 when he was appointed mayor. In 1698, he was appointed the fifth Mayor of Albany, New York, succeeding Dirck Wesselse Ten Broeck. He served in that role until 1699 when Pieter Van Brugh became the sixth mayor. Province Of New York
The Province of New York (1664–1776) was a British proprietary colony and later royal colony on the northeast coast of North America. As one of the Middle Colonies, New York achieved independence and worked with the others to found the United States. In 1664, the Dutch Province of New Netherland in America was awarded by Charles II of England to his brother James, Duke of York. James raised a fleet to take it from the Dutch and the Governor surrendered to the English fleet without recognition from the Dutch West Indies Company that had authority over it. History Of Albany, New York
The history of Albany, New York began long before the first interaction of Europeans with the native Indian tribes, as they had long inhabited the area. The area was originally inhabited by an Algonquian Indian tribe, the Mohican, as well as the Iroquois, five nations of whom the easternmost, the Mohawk, had the closest relations with traders and settlers in Albany. Henry Hudson first claimed this area for the Dutch in 1609. Fur traders established the first European settlement in 1614; Albany was officially chartered as a city in 1686. It succeeded Poughkeepsie as the capital of New York in 1797. It is one of the oldest surviving settlements from the original thirteen colonies, and the longest continuously chartered city in the United States. Johannes "John" Jacobse Beekman (August 8, 1733 – December 17, 1802) was a New York politician and businessman of Dutch descent. He served as Mayor of Albany, New York and a member of the New York State Assembly. Early life Beekman was born on August 8, 1733. He was the youngest of six children born to Debora ( Hansen) Beekman and Jacob Beekman (1685–1739), an Albany businessman and blacksmith. His sister, Debora Beekman, married Gerrit Staats. Johannes Cuyler (1661 – July 20, 1740) was a prominent American merchant of Dutch ancestry who served as the Mayor of Albany, New York, from 1725 to 1726. Early life and family Cuyler was born in 1661 in New Amsterdam in the Province of New Netherland, which in 1664 became the Province of New York.
