Helsinki University Symphony Orchestra
The Ylioppilaskunnan Soittajat ("YS", the Helsinki University Symphony Orchestra) is a symphony orchestra resident in Helsinki, Finland. YS was founded in 1926. It is a full-sized symphony orchestra, and performs concerts and tours both at home in Finland and abroad and takes part in various academic festivities. History The Ylioppilaskunnan Soittajat can trace its roots back to the year 1747, when the Akateeminen Kapelli (the Academic Capella) was founded at the Turku Academy. After the great fire of Turku in 1827, the university moved to Helsinki, taking the orchestra with it. From 1868 until 1926, the orchestra was run as a department of the University of Helsinki, under the name of Akadeeminen Orkesteri (the Academic Orchestra). Esa-Pekka Salonen
Esa-Pekka Salonen (; born 30 June 1958) is a Finnish orchestral conductor and composer. He is principal conductor and artistic advisor of the Philharmonia Orchestra in London, conductor laureate of the Los Angeles Philharmonic, and music director of the San Francisco Symphony. Life and career Early work Born in Helsinki, Finland, Salonen graduated from Helsingin Suomalainen Yhteiskoulu (SYK), one of the top high schools in Finland, in 1977 and then went to study horn and composition at the Sibelius Academy in Helsinki, as well as conducting with Jorma Panula. Mikk Murdvee (born March 20, 1980) is an Estonian-Finnish Conductor (music), conductor and violinist living in Helsinki, Finland. Education Mikk Murdvee was born in Tallinn. He studied violin in Tallinn Music High School (1986–1998), Estonian Academy of Music and Theatre and Sibelius Academy (1999–2005), graduating from the latter with highest possible marks. He started conducting studies privately with Atso Almila in 2000. 2002–2007 he studied in Sibelius Academy conducting class, where his teachers were Leif Segerstam, Atso Almila and Jorma Panula plus many other visiting teachers. David Searle (conductor)
David Harry Searle (1936 – March 1, 2021) was a Canadian politician and lawyer from the Northwest Territories. Legal career Born in Edmonton, Alberta, Searle moved to Yellowknife, Northwest Territories with his family in 1946. He was educated at the University of Alberta. Searle established his law practice in 1963 partnering with Justice Mark de Weerdt in Yellowknife. He practised law in the territory until 1981. He served as a crown attorney until his election in 1967. Searle moved to Vancouver and practised mining and environmental law with a firm called Davis & Company. He served as president of the Law Society of the Northwest Territories. From 1991 to 2004, he was a professor at the University of British Columbia Faculty of Law. Searle was named to the Order of Canada in 1999 as a Member. Searle retired in August 2006.
