Heloísa Maranhão
Heloísa dos Reis Maranhão (1925 – 15 December 2014) was a Brazilian novelist, playwright and short-story writer. Life and career Heloísa Maranhão was born in Rio de Janeiro in 1925. She is a descendant of the 16th-century colonial governor Jeronimo de Albuquerque. She received a classical education, at a French-speaking boarding school run by nuns, before graduating in law from the University of Brasília. She worked as a translator and radio producer and teacher of theater. To maintain her freedom, she never married and lived for many years with her sister. In the 1950s and 1960s, Heloísa wrote experimental theater. ''Castelo interior & moradas'' (1978) contained poems linked intertextually to ancient religious texts. Her first novel, ''Lucrezia'' (1979), was set in Renaissance Rome, fusing historical figures in the character of Lucrezia Borgia. PEN International (known as International PEN until 2010) is a worldwide association of writers, founded in London in 1921 to promote friendship and intellectual co-operation among writers everywhere. The association has autonomous International PEN centers in over 100 countries. The history of Brazil begins with indigenous people in Brazil. Europeans arrived in Brazil at the ending of the 15th century. The first European to claim sovereignty over Indigenous lands part of what is now the territory of the Federative Republic of Brazil on the continent of South America was Pedro Álvares Cabral (c. 1467/1468 – c. 1520) on 22 April 1500 under the sponsorship of the Kingdom of Portugal. From the 16th to the early 19th century, Brazil was a colony and a part of the Portuguese Empire.
