Helmut H. Schaefer
Helmut Heinrich Schaefer (February 14, 1925 in Großenhain, Weimar Republic – December 16, 2005 in Tübingen, Germany) was a German mathematician, who worked primarily in functional analysis. His two best known scientific monographs are titled ''Topological Vector Spaces'' (1966) and ''Banach Lattices'' ''and Positive Operators'' (1974). The first of these was subsequently translated into Spanish and Russian. The second made him an internationally recognized and leading scholar in this particular field of mathematics. Großenhain
Großenhain (also written as Grossenhain; hsb, Wulki Hojn) is a Große Kreisstadt (German for major district town) in the district of Meissen, Saxony, Germany. It was originally known as Hayne. The current name simply means "big Hayne" History Großenhain was originally a Sorbian settlement, and remains an area where this language is spoken. It was first mentioned in 1205. It was for a time occupied by the Bohemians, by whom it was strongly fortified. It afterwards came into the possession of the margraves of Meissen, from whom it was taken in 1312 by the margraves of Brandenburg. In the middle-ages, Großenhain was one of the most powerful towns in Saxony. It suffered considerably in all the great German wars, and in 1744 was nearly destroyed by fire. Sächsisches Landesgymnasium Sankt Afra zu Meißen is a boarding school for highly gifted students in the German city of Meissen, Saxony. Founded in 1543 as ''Fürstliche Landesschule'' and re-established in 2001, the stated aim of the school is to promote the intellectual and social development of highly gifted students. The costs for attending the school comply with the maxim of social balance; the boarding and schooling fees are considerably low in contrast to similar institutions. It is the first publicly funded school for highly gifted students in Germany and is a role model for similar schools. The school has no official English name. Its German name translates to "Saxon State Gymnasium Saint Afra in Meissen", and is derived from the former Augustinian monastery of the Canons Regular that had been built around the local Saint Afra church. Graduate Texts in Mathematics (GTM) (ISSN 0072-5285) is a series of graduate-level textbooks in mathematics published by Springer-Verlag. The books in this series, like the other Springer-Verlag mathematics series, are yellow books of a standard size (with variable numbers of pages). The GTM series is easily identified by a white band at the top of the book. Peter Roquette
Peter Roquette (born 8 October 1927) is a German mathematician working in algebraic geometry, algebra, and number theory. He was born in Königsberg. Roquette studied in Erlangen, Berlin, and Hamburg. In 1951 he defended a dissertation at the University of Hamburg under Helmut Hasse, providing a new proof of the Riemann hypothesis for algebraic function fields over a finite field (the first proof was given by André Weil in 1940). In 1951/1952 he was an assistant at the Mathematical Research Institute at Oberwolfach and from 1952 to 1954 at the University of Munich. From 1954 to 1956 he worked at the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton. In 1954 he was Privatdozent at Munich, and from 1956 to 1959 he worked in the same position at Hamburg. In 1959 he became an associate professor at the University of Saarbrucken and in the same year at the University of Tübingen.
