''Hell Has Harbour Views'' is a 2001 novel written by Richard Beasley. A 2005 ABC telemovie written and directed by Peter Duncan, was based on the novel. Synopsis The story is set in a corrupt Sydney law firm and follows the protagonist, Hugh Walker, a lawyer who always hoped he would be a defender of the poor and oppressed, until a Sydney law firm dangled an office with a harbour view in front of him. In no time he is turning a blind eye to suspect time sheets, representing powerful companies against powerless people, and not being entirely honest with his girlfriend. Development and publication Beasley began writing the novel while working at a small law firm and has stated that it is based on several stories and people. Richard Beasley (author)
Richard Beasley (born 1964) is an Australian barrister, novelist and nonfiction writer. Early life and legal career Richard Beasley SC was born in Sydney, but grew up in Adelaide, South Australia. He completed undergraduate studies in law at the University of Adelaide and worked at Duncan Groom and Hannon which was a law firm affiliated with the ALP. He moved to Sydney in 1992, where he completed postgraduate studies at the University of Sydney. He worked as a solicitor until 1997. He was admitted as a barrister at the NSW Bar in 1997, and was made a 'Silk' in 2011. From January 2018 to February 2019, he was Senior Counsel Assisting the Murray Darling Basin Royal Commission, and in 2020 was Senior Counsel Assisting the Ruby Princess Special Commission of Inquiry. Since 2016, he has been the Presiding Member of the New South Wales Racing Appeal Panel. Writing career Beasley is also the author of five novels and one non-fiction book. ''Hell Has Harbour Views'' is a 2005 Australian television movie starring Matt Day and Lisa McCune. It was written and directed by Peter Duncan, based on the 2001 novel of the same name by Richard Beasley. It was nominated for "best miniseries or telemovie" at both the AFI Awards and the Logie Awards, losing to ''The Incredible Journey of Mary Bryant'' at both; and for two additional AFI Awards and an additional Logie Award, all of which it lost to ''Love My Way''. Synopsis While successful and primed to continue ascending the company ladder, attorney Hugh Walker is guilt stricken by the people he and his company have hurt along the way.
