Helen Graham de Freitas, Lady de Freitas ( Bell; 16 August 1910 – 14 December 1998) was an American-born British public servant, and "a leading member of the American community in London". She was born in Chicago, Illinois on 16 August 1910 and grew up in Winnetka, the eldest of four daughters of Laird Bell Laird Bell (1883–1965) was a distinguished attorney and Democrat who founded a leading Chicago law firm and endowed several charitable institutions. Bell was an extraordinarily active contributor in a variety of social and not-for-profit ca ..., an American lawyer, who was chairman of the Chicago Council on Foreign Relations. She graduated from Bryn Mawr in 1936. In 1938, she married the British politician and diplomat Sir Geoffrey de Freitas, and they have three sons, and one daughter. The Independent
''The Independent'' is a British online newspaper. It was established in 1986 as a national morning printed paper. Nicknamed the ''Indy'', it began as a broadsheet and changed to tabloid format in 2003. The last printed edition was published on Saturday 26 March 2016, leaving only the online edition. The newspaper was controlled by Tony O'Reilly's Irish Independent News & Media from 1997 until it was sold to the Russian oligarch and former KGB Officer Alexander Lebedev in 2010. In 2017, Sultan Muhammad Abuljadayel bought a 30% stake in it. The daily edition was named National Newspaper of the Year at the 2004 British Press Awards.
