Helen Logan
Helen Logan (December 13, 1906 – January 15, 1989) was an American screenwriter active from 1935 to 1950. Biography Helen Logan was born in Los Angeles, California, to William Edson Logan and Ida Jane Busick. She attended the University of California at Los Angeles and then went to work at Fox as a script reader before moving up the ranks to be a script clerk. Eventually she began writing her own screenplays for Fox, working on two popular franchises, ''Charlie Chan'' and the Jones Family. Later she worked on wartime musical films. She wrote many of her scripts in collaboration with writer-director-actor Robert Ellis, who she began working with around 1934 and married at some point after 1940. In fact, in 1938, Ellis was sued by actress Vera Reynolds for $150,000; Reynolds alleged that Ellis had promised to marry her but instead took a trip to Mexico with Logan. ''Charlie Chan at the Olympics'' (1937) is possibly the most topical Charlie Chan film, as it features actual footage from the 1936 Berlin Olympics. There is also a scene where Charlie crosses the Atlantic in the '' Hindenburg.'' This is the 14th film starring Warner Oland as Chan and produced by Fox. Plot Charlie Chan is proud of his oldest son, swimmer Lee (Keye Luke), being chosen to represent the United States at the 1936 Summer Olympics in Berlin. Meanwhile, over the skies of Chan's Honolulu, the "Hopkins plane" is demonstrating an improvement of remote radio control to the US military. The aircraft is hijacked by a concealed stowaway, the device stolen, and the test pilot murdered. ''Hello, Frisco, Hello'' is a 1943 American musical film directed by H. Bruce Humberstone and starring Alice Faye, John Payne, Lynn Bari, and Jack Oakie. The film was made in Technicolor and released by 20th Century-Fox. This was one of the last musicals made by Faye for Fox, and in later interviews Faye said it was clear Fox was promoting Betty Grable as her successor. Released at the height of World War II, the film became one of Faye's highest-grossing pictures for Fox. The film tells the story of vaudeville performers in San Francisco, during the period of the 1915 Panama Pacific Exposition when Alexander Graham Bell made the first transcontinental phone call from New York City to San Francisco. ''Iceland'' (1942) is a 20th Century Fox musical film directed by H. Bruce Humberstone set in Iceland, starring skater Sonja Henie and John Payne as a U.S. Marine posted in Iceland during World War II. The film was titled ''Katina'' in Great Britain and ''Marriage on Ice'' in Australia. Fox reteamed their two leads and director from the previous year's musical ''Sun Valley Serenade'' and set the story in the then contemporary American Marine landing and occupation of Iceland in 1941. Payne had previously played a Marine in Fox's ''To the Shores of Tripoli'' also directed by Humberstone. Among the songs are "There Will Never Be Another You" and "You Can't Say No to a Soldier". Some Icelanders protested against the film for its depiction of Marines winning away the local women.
