Helen Gregory
Helen Gregory (born 1946) is a prominent historian, author and retired public servant in and of Brisbane, Queensland Australia and its surrounds. She holds a Bachelor of Arts, BA (Hons) from the University of Queensland and is a former adjunct professor of that institution. In 1969 Helen Gregory was the first Queensland woman to be offered a Rotary International, Rotary Overseas Postgraduate Scholarship, but was unable to take up the award. In the mid 1970s she was a consultant historian to the private and government sectors, and is believed to be the first graduate historian in Queensland to use her training in this way, demonstrating that privately commissioned histories could be undertaken without sacrificing academic standards or ethical integrity. Eleanor Schonell Bridge, Brisbane
The Eleanor Schonell Bridge, better known as the Green Bridge, is a 390-metre (1,280 ft)-long cable-stayed bridge which crosses the Brisbane River between Dutton Park and the University of Queensland's St Lucia campus, connecting the UQ Lakes and Dutton Park Place busway stations. Its deck is 185 metres long, 20 metres wide and about 18 metres above the river's surface. The bridge was opened on 17 December 2006, and is the first bridge in Australia exclusively designed for buses, cyclists and pedestrians. The bridge cost $55.5 million to construct. The opening of the bridge signalled the end of the popular cross-river ferry service between Dutton Park and St Lucia, which had been running since 1967. Felix Arnott
Felix Raymond Arnott CMG, Th.D., M.A., B.A. (8 March 1911 – 27 July 1988) was the sixth Archbishop of the Anglican Diocese of Brisbane. Early life and education He was born on 8 March 1911 and educated at Ipswich School and Keble College, Oxford. Career Ordained after a period of study at Ripon College Cuddesdon in 1934, his first post was a curacy in the parish of All Saints and St Mary, Elland (1934–38). After that he was chaplain to the Bishop of Wakefield (1936–39), during which he was also Vice-Principal of Bishops' College, Cheshunt (1938–39). He was then Warden of St John's College, Brisbane (1939–46). From 1946 to 1963, he held a similar post at St. Paul's College, Sydney, where he was also a lecturer in ecclesiastical history at the University of Sydney. Toowong
Toowong is a riverside suburb in the City of Brisbane, Queensland, Australia. In the , Toowong had a population of 10,830 people. Geography Toowong is situated between Mount Coot-tha and the Brisbane River and is made up of rolling hills with little flat land. Since European settlement most of the land has been cleared for residential and commercial use with the exception of some park land and bushland near the Western Freeway. At the centre of Toowong is a commercial precinct including Toowong Village, and several other commercial and office buildings. The western side of the suburb is predominantly residential with a mix of medium density dwellings and detached Queenslander houses, extending to the foothills of Mount Coot-tha. Queensland Law Society
The Queensland Law Society is the peak professional body for solicitors in Queensland, Australia. It represents more than 9,000 members, and is affiliated with the Law Council of Australia. The society provides support and public advocacy for the legal profession. The society originated as an informal meeting of solicitors in Brisbane, on the 7th of August 1873, and was formalised as the "Queensland Law Association" in 1883. In 1927, it was incorporated under the current name, the "Queensland Law Society". In 1941, during difficult years when many lawyers were called to war, the society first engaged a full-time employee, Beryl Donkin, as secretary and chief administrative officer. Maroochy
The Shire of Maroochy was a local government area about north of Brisbane in the Sunshine Coast region of South East Queensland, Australia. The shire covered an area of , and existed as a local government entity from 1890 until 2008, when it amalgamated with its neighbours to the north and south to form the Sunshine Coast Region. History In 1842, Andrew Petrie explored the coast north of Brisbane and discovered the Mary River with a small party including two Aboriginal men from the Brisbane River region who spoke the Yuggera language. Their name for the local black swan was "Muru-kutchi" or "red-bill". Petrie hence named the area Maroochy. McLeod Country Golf Club
McLeod Country Golf Club is an 18-hole golf course located in Mount Ommaney, Queensland, Mount Ommaney, Brisbane, Queensland, Australia. It was the first golf club in Australia to give women members equal rights to men, and is one of few golf clubs in the world managed entirely by female members. Brisbane River
The Brisbane River is the longest river in South East Queensland, Australia, and flows through the city of Brisbane, before emptying into Moreton Bay on the Coral Sea. John Oxley, the first European to explore the river, named it after the Governor of New South Wales, Sir Thomas Brisbane in 1823. The penal colony of Moreton Bay later adopted the same name, eventually becoming the present city of Brisbane. The river is a tidal estuary and the water is brackish from its mouth through the majority of the Brisbane metropolitan area westward to the Mount Crosby Weir.
