The Heinrich Heine Prize of the Ministry of Culture of the GDR was founded on February 17, 1956 and awarded once a year on December 13, Heine's birthday, for lyrical works and works of literary journalism . The price since 1979 was 10,000 and later 15,000 marks . 1989 the prize was not awarded, but in 1990 for both years. The Ministry of Culture existed until October 1990. Heinz Knobloch
Heinz Knobloch (3 March 1926 – 24 July 2003) was a German writer and journalist, who spent most of his professional career working in the German Democratic Republic (East Germany). Life Early years Knobloch was born in Dresden, the son of a photographer. When his father became unemployed the family moved to Berlin in 1935. He started a commercial training with a publishing business in 1942, but in 1943 he was conscripted into the army and was sent as a soldier to France. Army life He deserted from the army near St. Lo in July 1944, shortly after the Normandy landings of the anti-German coalition armies. Knobloch spent the next four or so years as a Prisoner of War in the US and in Scotland. In the USA he gained hands-on experience in Alabama of the agricultural business (maize, sugar cane, ground-nuts/pea-nuts, tomatoes, cotton), in Pennsylvania, of industrial work, and in Virginia of timber logging and garbage disposal. Stephan Hermlin
Stephan Hermlin (; 13 April 1915 – 6 April 1997), real name ''Rudolf Leder,'' was a German author. He wrote, among other things, stories, essays, translations, and lyric poetry and was one of the more well-known authors of former East Germany. Life Hermlin was born in 1915 in Chemnitz, Germany, in what is now the Federal State of Saxony, the son of Jewish immigrant and art collector David Leder and his wife Lola, he grew both in Chemnitz and in Berlin. In 1931, he joined a communist youth organization. From 1933 until 1936, he worked as a printer's apprentice. He emigrated from Germany in 1936, and between then and his return to Germany in 1945 at the end of World War II, lived in Palestine, France, and Switzerland. Volker Braun (born 7 May 1939 in Dresden) is a German writer. His works include ''Provokation für mich'' (''Provocation for me'') – a collection of poems written between 1959 and 1964 and published in 1965, a play, ''Die Kipper'' (''The Dumpers'') (1972; written 1962–1965), and ''Das ungezwungene Leben Kasts'' (''The Unrestrained Life of Kast'') (1972). Helmut Hauptmann (born 12 March 1928) is a German writer who was mainly active in the then East Germany. Life Helmut Hauptmann grew up in a working-class family in Berlin-Kreuzberg. Near the end of World War II, he served as a Luftwaffenhelfer in Berlin and became a Prisoner of war at a camp in Schleswig-Holstein. After the Abitur, he worked with the Magistrate of Greater Berlin. Since the early 1950s, he has worked as a literary editor, journalist, and writer in Berlin. Hauptmann writes narrative works that reflect the ideological optimism of early East Germany as well as travel journals which captured the experience of the writer in the Eastern Bloc. Hauptmann was a member of the Schriftstellerverband der DDR since 1956 and the P.E.N.-Zentrum of East Germany since 1972.
