Heimatfilm
' (, German for "homeland-films"; German singular: ') were films of a genre popular in Germany, Switzerland, and Austria from the late 1940s to the early 1960s. ''Heimat'' can be translated as "home" (in the geographic sense), "hometown" or "homeland". History The genre came to life after the devastation of Germany in World War II, and remained popular from the late 40s to the early 60s. The films suggested a whole, romantic world untouched by war and the hazards of real life. The Berlin-based studio Berolina Film was the driving force behind the development of ''Heimatfilme''. In the immediate post-World War II era, the idea of ' is linked to the experience of loss of more than twelve million Germans, known as Vertriebene, who were displaced from the former eastern territories of Germany in its pre-1938 borders. Berolina Film
Berolina Film (often shortened to Berolina) was a film production company which operated in West Germany between 1948 and 1964. The film's production was supervised by the experienced Kurt Ulrich and was based in West Berlin. The company helped launch a cycle of popular heimatfilm made in the 1950s.Hake p.90 The companies name is a reference to Berolina, the allegorical female figure representing the city of Berlin. ''Hunting Scenes from Bavaria'' () is a 1969 West German film directed by Peter Fleischmann. It is based on a play of the same name by Martin Sperr, who also played the main role in the film. It was chosen as West Germany's official submission to the 42nd Academy Awards for Best Foreign Language Film, but did not manage to receive a nomination. Plot In a small village in Lower Bavaria, twenty-year-old mechanic Abram (Martin Sperr) is suspected of being homosexual. He is not the only outsider, as also present are a foreign guest worker and the maidservant Hannelore (Angela Winkler), who is defamed as a whore by the villagers. When Abram knifes Hannelore the situation escalates and the hysterical villagers try to hunt Abram down. Production The film was shot in the small village of Unholzing in Postau near Landshut. Peter Fleischmann (26 July 1937 – 11 August 2021) was a German film director, screenwriter and producer. He worked also as an actor, cutter, sound engineer, interviewer and speaker. Fleischmann belonged to the New German Cinema of the 1960s and 1970s. He is known for directing the 1969 '' Jagdszenen aus Niederbayern'' (''Hunting Scenes from Bavaria''), but he produced films of many genres. Life and career Peter Fleischmann was born in Zweibrücken. He studied at the (German Institute of Film and Television, DIFF) in Munich and Institut des hautes études cinématographiques (''IDHEC'') in Paris. Volker Schlöndorff (; born 31 March 1939 Friday) is a German film director, screenwriter and producer who has worked in Germany, France and the United States. He was a prominent member of the New German Cinema of the late 1960s and early 1970s, which also included Werner Herzog, Wim Wenders, Margarethe von Trotta and Rainer Werner Fassbinder.
