Heeswijk-Dinther
Heeswijk-Dinther (population: 7,985) is a town and former municipality in the southern Netherlands, in the province of North Brabant being named after the former municipalities Heeswijk and Dinther. The municipality was created in 1969, and became a part of Bernheze in 1994.Ad van der Meer and Onno Boonstra, "Repertorium van Nederlandse gemeenten", KNAW, 2006. Likewise, the town itself consisted of the former villages of Heeswijk and Dinther, which have grown together. After the merger into Bernheze, the town has been split up into Heeswijk and Dinther again. In 2008 the town was registered with the government as a single town. Only in 2017, the town is officially called Heeswijk-Dinther. The municipality of Dinther included the town of Loosbroek. Bernheze
Bernheze () is a municipality in the southern Netherlands, in the province of North Brabant. It was formed as a rename of Heesch in 1995. The municipalities of Heeswijk-Dinther and Nistelrode had merged into Heesch in 1994. Etymology The municipality was named after an old farm "Bernhese", which came into the possession of the Berne Abbey. This abbey was situated in the village of Bern. The meaning of 'Bernhese' is twofold: 'Bern' is the same as the old-Dutch word 'born', that means 'water' or 'well'. 'Hese' means bush or forest. In 1857 the Berne Abbey was founded in Heeswijk. Heeswijk
Heeswijk is a Dutch village. It is located in the province of North Brabant, in the south of the Netherlands. History The village was first mentioned in the 12th century as "Albertus de Essuic", and means "settlement in the shrubbery". Heeswijk is a stretched out settlement in the valley of brook and dates from the Early Middle Ages. The Premonstratensian abbey was established in the late-12th century as an outpost of the Berne Abbey. In 1546, "Het Slotje" was built for the monks as an L-shaped building with a square tower in the corner. After the Berne Abbey was dissolved in 1648, some monks moved to the , an enclave of Palatinate-Neuburg within the Dutch Republic, and founded a new abbey in Heeswijk. Dinther
Dinther is a village in the Dutch province of North Brabant. It is located in the municipality of Bernheze. Dinther was a separate municipality and town until 1969, when it merged with Heeswijk to form the new municipality of Heeswijk-Dinther. Since the municipal merger, the two towns started to share a marketplace and center. Today the towns form the greater town of Heeswijk-Dinther. Etymology The settlement now known as Dinther initially appears as ''Dinthre'' in a document of 1139. The name has an Old Frankish origin and is a composition of the words "Dint" and "haar". "Dint" (or "dent") means "dent" or "dented" usually it implies a landscape with rolling heights. "Haar" is an old Dutch word for a long stretchted sand dune. Loosbroek
Loosbroek is a village and parish in the southern Netherlands. It is located in the municipality Bernheze, North Brabant. Before 1994 the territory of Loosbroek was divided between three municipalities, Nistelrode, Heesch (Netherlands), Heesch and Heeswijk-Dinther. History The village was first mentioned in 1196 as "paludis que vocatur Loesbruch", and means "empty swampy land". In 1648, after the Protestant Reformation, Loosbroek became part of the States of Brabant within the Meierij van 's-Hertogenbosch. In 1795 the French invaded the Dutch Republic and "freedom of faith" was restored in Loosbroek. In 1814 Loosbroek became part of the Kingdom of the Netherlands. Heeswijk Castle
Heeswijk Castle ( nl, Kasteel Heeswijk) is a moated castle near Heeswijk in the Dutch province of North Brabant. Location Heeswijk Castle was built on a meander of the small River Aa. The 20th century canalized Aa now flows at some distance of the Castle. However, in the early decades of the 21st century the original bed of the Aa closer to the castle, was restored and now gets enough water. The Aa was crucial for transporting heavy goods between 's-Hertogenbosch and Helmond, and perhaps even somewhat higher upstream. This gave an economic reason to build the castle on the river. On the other hand, the Aa was a barrier for east–west movement, especially by armies. This also gave the castle a strategic position, which it would keep for centuries.
