Heerstraße (Berlin)
Heerstraße (; literally: Army Street) runs from Theodor-Heuss-Platz in Berlin-Charlottenburg to the western city border of Berlin in the locality of Staaken in the borough of Spandau. It is part of Bundesstraße 5; from Theodor-Heuss-Platz to Wilhelmstraße it is forms part of Bundesstraße 2. With a length of around 10 kilometres, it is one of the longest streets in Berlin and an important commuter route. The street is a five-lane expressway (Kraftfahrstraße), depending on traffic flow the middle lane is available during rush hours in the morning (eastbound) and in the evening (westbound). History Planning and construction The construction of the street started in 1874 from Berlin-Charlottenburg to Pichelsberg. Berlin Heerstraße Station
Heerstraße is a railway station in Berlin, Germany. It is located on the Spandau Suburban Line in the Westend district and served by S-Bahn and trains. The station is today listed as a historical monument. Location The station is situated on the Heerstraße road, the major thoroughfare from Berlin's inner city to the west. The street, a section of the ''Bundesstraße 2'' and '' 5'' highways, originally led to the former proving grounds in Döberitz, thus the name ''Heer'' (land army). The large Grunewald forest with the Teufelsberg hill is located nearby in the south. The Frankfurt U-Bahn is a Stadtbahn system serving Frankfurt, Hesse, Germany. Together with the Rhine-Main S-Bahn and the Frankfurt Straßenbahn, it forms the backbone of the public transport system in Frankfurt. Chaussee
''Chaussee'' is an historic term used in German-speaking countries for early, metalled, rural highways, designed by road engineers, as opposed to the hitherto, traditional, unpaved country roads. The term is no longer used in modern road construction in Western Europe, but survives in road names and is used by historians. In Eastern Europe and the post Soviet states it remains a generic term for a common paved highway outside of built-up areas, but they may transition into prospekts within towns and cities. Origin of the word and usage The German word was borrowed from the French by the German construction industry in the 18th century. Roman roads ( la, viae Romanae ; singular: ; meaning "Roman way") were physical infrastructure vital to the maintenance and development of the Roman state, and were built from about 300 BC through the expansion and consolidation of the Roman Republic and the Roman Empire.
