Heenvliet
Heenvliet is a town in the Dutch province of South Holland. It is a part of the municipality of Nissewaard, and lies about 7 km south of Maassluis, on the Brielse Maas. Heenvliet was a separate municipality until 1980, when it became part of Bernisse. In 2001, the town of Heenvliet had 2,675 inhabitants. Ravesteyn Castle
Ravesteyn Castle (nl: Kasteel Ravesteyn) is a castle in Heenvliet, South Holland. The castle was likely built circa 1250, and was in use until being destroyed during the Eighty Years' War. The castle ruins are part of a protected garden. Description Ravesteyn Castle was built in the mid-13th century by Hugo, Lord of Heenvliet. Ravensteyn Castle was one of 5 fortified structures built in the area and would be the only one to survive. The two story castle was occupied for several centuries. A residential wing was added to the castle in the 14th-century, and that same century the fortification burned to its foundations before being rebuilt. The castle continued to serve as a prison and military fortification during the 16th-century; notably, one source noted that Dutch priest Angelus Merula was once imprisoned in the castle. Bernisse
Bernisse () is a former municipality in the western Netherlands, in the province of South Holland. Since 2015 it has been a part of the municipality of Nissewaard. The former municipality had a population of in , and covered an area of of which was water. The former municipality was named after the river Bernisse, which flows right through it from the Spui to the Brielse Meer and separates the estuary islands of Voorne and Putten. The former municipality of Bernisse consisted of the following communities: Abbenbroek, Biert, Geervliet, Heenvliet, Oudenhoorn, Simonshaven, Zuidland. Nissewaard () is a municipality in the Netherlands, located on the island of Voorne-Putten, in the south of the province of South Holland. Maassluis
Maassluis () is a city in the western Netherlands, in the province of South Holland. The municipality had a population of in and covered of which was water. It received city rights in 1811. History Maassluis was founded circa 1340 as a settlement next to a lock (in Dutch: ''sluis'') in the sea barrier between the North Sea and Rotterdam. Originally ''Maeslandsluys'', it was part of Maesland. In 1489 the settlement was sacked. During the Eighty Years' War, Philips of Marnix, lord of Sint-Aldegonde, started to build a defense wall but before its completion, the Spanish captured it in 1573 and Philips of Marnix was taken prisoner.
