Heeley F.C.
Heeley F.C. was an English association football club based in Sheffield, Yorkshire. History Heeley were one of the major teams in the area during the 1860s and 70s. The club was founded by attendees of the Christ Church in Heeley, in 1862 and played to the Sheffield rules until the merger with the Football Association in 1877. The club was named after the Sheffield suburb of the same name; until 1870 the club played at Wellsbrook Park before moving to Meersbrook. Heeley was involved in the formation of the Sheffield Football Association and played in the Youdan Cup. They built a fierce rivalry with The Wednesday, and met them in the first ever final of the Sheffield Challenge Cup at Bramall Lane, losing 3–4 after extra-time. Association football, more commonly known as football or soccer, is a team sport played between two teams of 11 players who primarily use their feet to propel the ball around a rectangular field called a pitch. John Hudson (footballer)
John Hudson (11 October 1860 – 21 November 1941) was an English footballer who played as a half back. Born in Sheffield, Hudson played for hometown clubs Sheffield, The Wednesday and Sheffield United; he also represented England at international level. Career Club career Hudson played most of his club football in the Sheffield area, starting out with Heeley before joining Sheffield. As a semi-professional Hudson played for a number of different teams in this period, as allowed by FA rules. He joined The Wednesday in 1880, making his debut that December. While at Wednesday, Hudson made 16 appearances in the FA Cup, before the advent of the Football League. During his time with Wednesday, Hudson was briefly club secretary and a committee man. He left The Wednesday in 1885 after taking a benefit match and then spent a short time with Blackburn Olympic. The Nottingham derby is the name given to football matches contested between Nottingham Forest and Notts County. History The two clubs are amongst the oldest football clubs in the World. County were formed in 1862 and are the oldest professional association football club in the world. Forest were formed three years later by a group of men playing the now largely unknown sport of bandy. The first meeting between the two clubs was a friendly on 22 March 1866. Grantham () is a market and industrial town in the South Kesteven district of Lincolnshire, England, situated on the banks of the River Witham and bounded to the west by the A1 road. Bye (sports)
In sport, a bye is the preferential status of a player or team that is automatically advanced to the next round of a tournament, without having to play an opponent in an early round. In knockout (elimination) tournaments they can be granted either to reward the highest ranked participant(s) or assigned randomly, to make a working bracket if the number of participants is not a power of two (e.g. 16 or 32). In round-robin tournaments, usually one competitor gets a bye in each round when there are an odd number of competitors, as it is impossible for all competitors to play in the same round. However, over the whole tournament, each plays the same number of games as well as sitting out for the same number of rounds. The "Berger Tables" used by FIDE for chess tournaments, provide pairings for even numbered pools and simply state that "Where there is an odd number of players, the highest number counts as a bye."
