Hedley Francis Gregory Bridges
Hedley Francis Gregory Bridges, (April 7, 1902 – August 10, 1947) was a Canadian politician. Born in Fredericton, New Brunswick, the son of Hedley Vicars Burpee Bridges and Mabel Eloise Fulton Gregory, he was educated at the University of New Brunswick. He studied law and was called to the Bar of New Brunswick in 1927. Bridges served as solicitor for the Royal Bank of Canada at Campbellton. He also taught school and was a high school principal. Bridges was a member of the Legislative Assembly of New Brunswick for the electoral district of Restigouche from 1935 to 1939. From 1936 to 1938, he was the Speaker of the Legislative Assembly. During World War II, he served in the Canadian Army with the II Canadian Corps. After the war, he was elected to the House of Commons of Canada representing the riding of York—Sunbury in the 1945 federal election. York—Sunbury
Fredericton (formerly Fredericton—York—Sunbury) is a federal electoral district in New Brunswick, Canada, that has been represented in the House of Commons of Canada since 1988. Its population in 2021 was 87,436. Its predecessor riding, York—Sunbury, was represented in the House of Commons from 1917 to 1988. The district includes the city of Fredericton, and the towns of Oromocto, and Minto and vicinity. The neighbouring ridings are Miramichi, Beauséjour, Fundy Royal, New Brunswick Southwest, and Tobique—Mactaquac. Political geography "York—Sunbury" riding was created in 1914 from parts of Sunbury—Queen's and York ridings. 1945 Canadian Federal Election
The 1945 Canadian federal election was held on June 11, 1945, to elect members of the House of Commons of the 20th Parliament of Canada. Prime Minister William Lyon Mackenzie King's Liberal government was re-elected to its third consecutive term, although this time with a minority government as the Liberals fell five seats short of a majority. Since 1939, Canada had been fighting in World War II. In May 1945, the war in Europe ended, allowing King to call an election. As the war in Asia was still raging on, King promised a voluntary force to fight in Operation Downfall, the planned invasion of Japan, while Progressive Conservative Party (PC Party) leader John Bracken promised conscription, which was an unpopular proposal and led to the PCs' third consecutive defeat.
