Heavy (Collective Soul Song)
"Heavy" is a song by American post-grunge band Collective Soul. It is the second single from their fourth album '' Dosage''. It was the last of the band's seven number ones on Billboard's Hot Mainstream Rock Tracks, as well as their most successful, staying atop the chart for 15 weeks. It was also their last song to chart on the ''Billboard'' Hot 100, peaking at number 73. It was featured as one of two songs in ''NHL 2001''. Composition In a December 2017 interview with ''Songfacts'', lead singer Ed Roland explained the inspiration behind "Heavy". Collective Soul
Collective Soul is an American rock band originally from Stockbridge, Georgia. Now based in Atlanta, the group consists of lead vocalist Ed Roland, rhythm guitarist Dean Roland, bassist Will Turpin, drummer Johnny Rabb, and lead guitarist Jesse Triplett. Formed in 1992, the original lineup consisted of the Roland brothers, Turpin, guitarist Ross Childress, and drummer Shane Evans. Collective Soul released their '' Hints, Allegations, and Things Left Unsaid'' album on the independent label Rising Storm Records in 1993. The band went from obscurity to popularity that year after the album's lead single " Shine" received regional radio play. The album was then re-released in 1994 by the major label Atlantic Records; thus, "Shine" became a national hit as it peaked at No. 1 on the Mainstream Rock and No. 4 on the Mainstream Top 40 charts. RPM charts On June 11, 1995, Canadian music magazine '' RPM'' began publishing a weekly alternative rock music chart under the name ''Alternative 30''. ''RPM'' ( and later ) was a Canadian music-industry publication that featured song and album charts for Canada. The publication was founded by Walt Grealis in February 1964, supported through its existence by record label owner Stan Klees. ''RPM'' ceased publication in November 2000. Introduced as Modern Rock Tracks, the chart served as a companion to the Mainstream Rock chart (then called Album Rock Tracks), and its creation was prompted by the explosion of alternative music on American radio in the late 1980s. Will Turpin
William Ross Turpin (born February 8, 1971) is an American musician. He is best known for being the bassist of the rock band Collective Soul. He is also a solo artist, and tours with his backing band, the Way. His debut EP, ''The Lighthouse'', was released in 2011. He owns an indie record label called Gooey Music. Shane Evans (born April 26, 1970) is an American musician. He was the original drummer for the rock band Collective Soul. Life and career Early life and career beginnings Evans was raised in Stockbridge, Georgia. After graduating from Stockbridge High School, he began his career as a professional drummer for the band Marching Two-Step, which included Michele Rhea Caplinger, Ed Roland and Matt Serletic. The band performed local gigs for a few years, but never managed to grow beyond the club scene. Collective Soul Evans performed on half of the tracks featured on '' Hints Allegations and Things Left Unsaid'', an album consisting of Ed Roland's songwriting demos. ''Dosage'' is the fourth studio album by the American alternative rock rock band Collective Soul. The album was released on Atlantic Records in February 1999 and peaked at number 21 on the '' Billboard'' albums chart. The album's title was derived from a catchphrase they used to describe burnout after their previous tour. The first single from the album, "Heavy", gave the band another number-one hit on the Mainstream Rock Tracks chart and spent a then record-breaking 15 weeks on the top spot. "Heavy" was also featured in the opening of the video game ''NHL 2001'' and in the 2014 Golden Corral ad. The second single released, "Run", also gained broad mainstream radioplay and was featured on the soundtrack for the 1999 film '' Varsity Blues''.
