Heavenly Cause
Heavenly Cause (foaled May 22, 1978 in Maryland) was an American Thoroughbred champion racehorse. Background Bred by Adele W. Paxson, Heavenly Cause was sired by Grey Dawn, the 1964 French Champion Two-Year-Old Colt and 1990 Leading broodmare sire in North America. Her dam was Lady Dulcinea, a granddaughter of Nearco who has been described by '' Thoroughbred Heritage'' as "one of the greatest racehorses of the Twentieth Century" and "one of the most important sires of the century." She was purchased by Jim and Eleanor Ryan who raced her under the name of their Ryehill Farm. Heavenly Cause was trained by U.S. Racing Hall of Fame inductee, Woody Stephens. Grey Dawn II
Grey Dawn (1962–1991) was a French Thoroughbred Champion racehorse who was the only horse ever to beat Sea-Bird. Background Grey Dawn was bred and raced by American Gertrude Widener, a member by marriage of the prominent racing Widener family. She maintained homes and racing stables in New York City and Paris. Grey Dawn was trained by Etienne Pollet. Racing career In 1964, Grey Dawn defeated Sea-Bird in the Grand Critérium. He also won the Prix de la Salamandre and Prix Morny to earn French Champion Two-Year-Old Colt honors. At age three, Grey Dawn won the Prix de Fontainebleau and ran second in the Poule d'Essai des Poulains (French 2000 Guineas). In 1966, he was sent to race in the United States, where he was required to be registered as Grey Dawn II. Laurel Park Racecourse
Laurel Park, formerly Laurel Race Course, is an American thoroughbred racetrack located just outside Laurel, Maryland which opened in 1911. The track is miles in circumference. Its name was changed to "Laurel Race Course" for several decades until returning to the "Laurel Park" designation in 1994. History Laurel Park Racecourse opened October 2, 1911 under the direction of the Laurel Four County Fair. In 1914, New York businessmen and prominent horsemen, Philip J. Dwyer and James Butler purchased the track and appointed Matt Winn as the general manager. In 1918 the field was used by Army Engineers as a training camp before deployment to France. In 1946, a stable fire broke out with 60 horses saved. The Forward Gal Stakes is a Grade III American Thoroughbred horse race for three-year-old fillies, over a distance of seven furlongs on the dirt held annually in late January or early February at Gulfstream Park in Hallandale Beach, Florida. The event currently carries a purse of $125,000. History The race is named for Forward Gal, the American Champion Two-Year-Old Filly of 1970 and a career winner of twelve events in 26 starts. The inaugural running of the event was on 12 February 1981 and was won by Hickory Tree Stable's Dame Mysterieuse by lengths in a time of 1:22. Dame Mysterieuse starting as the 8/5 favorite was ridden by French-born jockey Jean-Luc Samyn and was trained by Hall of Fame trainer Woody Stephens. National Museum Of Racing And Hall Of Fame
The National Museum of Racing and Hall of Fame was founded in 1950 in Saratoga Springs, New York, to honor the achievements of American Thoroughbred race horses, jockeys, and trainers. In 1955, the museum moved to its current location on Union Avenue near Saratoga Race Course, at which time inductions into the hall of fame began. Each spring, following the tabulation of the final votes, the announcement of new inductees is made, usually during Kentucky Derby Week in early May. The actual inductions are held in mid-August during the Saratoga race meeting. The Hall of Fame's nominating committee selects eight to ten candidates from among the four Contemporary categories (male horse, female horse, jockey and trainer) to be presented to the voters. The National Sporting Library & Museum or NSLM (formerly the National Sporting Library) is a research library and art museum in Middleburg, Virginia in the United States. History The National Sporting Library was founded in 1954 in the personal library of George L. Ohrstrom, Sr. The founders of the National Sporting Library focused their new organization on accessibility of research materials on horse and field sports, finding other libraries on these topics to be insufficiently accessible to the public. The first president of the National Sporting Library was Fletcher Harper, long-time Master of the Orange County Hunt in The Plains, Virginia. Nearco
Nearco (January 24, 1935 – June 27, 1957) was an Italian-bred Thoroughbred racehorse described by ''Thoroughbred Heritage'' as "one of the greatest racehorses of the Twentieth Century" and "one of the most important sires of the century." He was unbeaten, winning 14 races at distances from 1000m (5 furlongs) to 3000m (1 mile 7 furlongs), including the Derby Italiano and Grand Prix de Paris. He was then sold for a record amount to Martin H. Benson and stood stud in England, where he became the patriarch of several of the most dominant sire lines in Thoroughbred history. Breeding Nearco was bred in Italy by Federico Tesio, who also bred several other champions including the undefeated Ribot.
