Heavenly (British Band)
Heavenly were a twee pop band, originally forming in Oxford, England in 1989. Amelia Fletcher (vocals/guitar), Mathew Fletcher (drums; Amelia's brother), Peter Momtchiloff (guitar) and Robert Pursey (bass) had all been members of Talulah Gosh, a key member of the C86 scene. History Heavenly debuted with the 7" single "I Fell in Love Last Night", followed by another 7", "Our Love Is Heavenly", both released in 1990 on Sarah Records. '' Heavenly vs. Satan'', the group's debut album, came out in 1991. At this stage in their career, the instrumentation remained very much the same jangly guitar style used by Talulah Gosh. Before releasing the critically acclaimed '' Le Jardin de Heavenly'', Cathy Rogers (keyboard, back-up vocals) joined the band. Twee Pop
Twee pop is a subgenre of indie pop that originates from the 1986 ''NME'' compilation ''C86''. Characterised by its simplicity and perceived innocence, some of its defining features are boy–girl harmonies, catchy melodies, and lyrics about love. For many years, prominent independent record labels associated with twee pop were Sarah Records (in the UK) and K Records (in the US). Characteristics The definition of twee is something "excessively or affectedly quaint, pretty, or sentimental", supposedly born from a childish mispronunciation of the word sweet. A retrospective fascination with the genre in the US saw Americans eagerly defining themselves as twee. According to ''The A.V. Colin Larkin (writer)
Colin Larkin (born 1949) is a British writer and entrepreneur. He founded, and was the editor-in-chief of, the ''Encyclopedia of Popular Music'', described by ''The Times'' as "the standard against which all others must be judged". Along with the ten-volume encyclopedia, Larkin also wrote the book ''All Time Top 1000 Albums'', and edited the ''Guinness Who's Who of Jazz'', the ''Guinness Who's Who of Blues'', and the ''Virgin Encyclopedia Of Heavy Rock''. He has over 650,000 copies in print to date. Background and education Larkin was born in Dagenham, Essex. Britpop
Britpop was a mid-1990s British-based music culture movement that emphasised Britishness. It produced brighter, catchier alternative rock, partly in reaction to the popularity of the darker lyrical themes of the US-led grunge music and to the UK's own shoegaze music scene. The movement brought British alternative rock into the mainstream and formed the backbone of a larger British popular cultural movement, Cool Britannia, which evoked the Swinging Sixties and the British guitar pop of that decade. Britpop was a media-driven focus on bands which emerged from the independent music scene of the early 1990s. Operation Heavenly
''Operation Heavenly'' is the fourth and final studio album by English indie pop band Heavenly. It was released by Wiiija in October 1996. In the United States it was issued by K Records, whose founder Calvin Johnson provided guest vocals on "Pet Monkey". The album contains ten original songs and a cover of Serge Gainsbourg's "Nous Ne Somme Pas Des Anges". K released "Trophy Girlfriend" on a split 7-inch single with two songs by Bis. The single bore the overall title ''International Pop Underground Vol. 66''. "Space Manatee" was also released as a single, backed by two exclusive B-sides: covers of "You Tore Me Down" (originally by The Flamin' Groovies) and "Art School" (by The Jam). The two cover versions were included on a Japanese reissue of the album in 1998. Music videos were made for both singles. ''The Decline and Fall of Heavenly'' is the third studio album by British indie pop band Heavenly. It was released in September 1994 by Sarah Records with the catalogue number SARAH 623 (see Sarah Records catalogue). In the United States the album was released by K Records. Four songs were re-recorded for a John Peel radio session in June 1994: the instrumental "Sacramento"; "Itchy Chin"; "Doomster (Three Star Compartment)"; and "Sperm Meets Egg, So What?". A Japanese reissue on Quattro added five tracks from two British EPs (also released on one CD by both Sarah and K): "Atta Girl"; "Dig Your Own Grave"; "P.U.N.K. Girl"; "Hearts and Crosses"; and "So". Farfisa
Farfisa (Fabbriche Riunite di Fisarmoniche) is a manufacturer of electronics based in Osimo, Italy, founded in 1946. The company manufactured a series of compact electronic organs in the 1960s and 1970s, including the Compact, FAST, Professional and VIP ranges, and later, a series of other keyboard instruments. They were used by a number of popular musicians including Sam the Sham, Pink Floyd, Sly Stone, Blondie, and the B-52s. The company was formed after three Italian accordion manufacturers combined to form a single company. They began to produce electronic instruments in the late 1950s, and combo organs were introduced in response to similar instruments such as the Vox Continental. Calvin Johnson (born November 1, 1962) is an American guitarist, vocalist, songwriter, music producer, and disc jockey. Known for his uniquely deep and droning singing voice, Johnson was a founding member of the bands Cool Rays, Beat Happening, Dub Narcotic Sound System, The Go Team and The Halo Benders. Calvin Johnson is also the founder and owner of the influential indie label K Records and has been cited as a major player in the beginning of the modern independent music movement.
