Heather Segal
Heather Mary Hope Brewer-Segal (1931–2006), born Heather Nicholls, was a Bermudian tennis player. Career Born in Lancashire, Brewer-Segal grew up on the island of Bermuda. She attended Rollins College in Florida, where she played varsity tennis, before competing on the international circuit through the 1950s and 1960s. Brewer-Segal, a left-handed player, made the singles semi-finals at the French Championships in both 1955 and 1958, while her best Wimbledon performance was a doubles semi-final appearance in 1954. She twice won the singles title at the South African Championships and was runner-up once. In 1957 she also won the Swiss International Championships at Gstaad. In 1958 she won the Italian Riviera Championships in Sanremo on clay against Mexico's Rosie Reyes. In 1960 she won the Trofeo Conde de Godó (known today as the Barcelona Open) on clay against Pilar Barril. Lancashire
Lancashire ( , ; abbreviated Lancs) is the name of a historic county, ceremonial county, and non-metropolitan county in North West England. The boundaries of these three areas differ significantly. The non-metropolitan county of Lancashire was created by the Local Government Act 1972. It is administered by Lancashire County Council, based in Preston, and twelve district councils. South African Open (tennis)
The South African Open – formerly known as the South African Championships, and for sponsorship reasons the Altech NCR South African Open and the Panasonic South African Open – is a defunct Grand Prix Tennis Tour, World Championship Series, ATP Tour and Virginia Slims Circuit affiliated tennis tournament played from 1891 to 2011 in South Africa. It was part of the pre-open era international seasonal tours from 1891 to 1967 from 1968 to 1971, part of the open era independent events tour from 1972, when it became part the men's Grand Prix Tour until 1989. The women's side of the competition was only briefly part of Virginia Slims tour (1970–74) before it returned to the independent circuit. The men's event joined the ATP Tour in 1990. Abe Segal
Alan Abraham Segal (23 October 1930 – 4 April 2016) was a South African tennis player. Early life and career He was born in Johannesburg, South Africa, and was Jewish. During the 1950s and 1960s, he was the doubles partner of Gordon Forbes. Together, they were considered one of the better doubles teams in the world. He was critical of South Africa's policy of apartheid. Alex Metreveli and István Gulyás both refused to compete in the 1964 Wimbledon against Segal, a white South African, because of apartheid. In response, black tennis player Arthur Ashe said he would play Segal any time because he did not think politics had a place in sports. Weeks later, Segal played Ashe in Illinois, beating him. This prompted the International Lawn Tennis Federation to pass a resolution prohibiting racial discrimination and withdrawing from a tournament except for "health or bereavement" reasons. Rosie Reyes
Rosa María "Rosie" Reyes Darmon (''née'' Reyes; born 23 March 1939) is a retired tennis player from Mexico who was active in the 1950s and 1960s. Most of her success came on clay on which she won the women's doubles title at the 1958 French Championships with countrywoman Yola Ramírez. She also reached the finals at the same event in 1957 and 1959. In singles, her best result at a Grand Slam tournament was reaching the semifinals of the 1959 French Championships in which she lost in straight sets to Zsuzsa Körmöczy of Hungary. She competed in the women's doubles event at 1968 Summer Olympics, where tennis was reintroduced as an exhibition and demonstration event. Partnering Julie Heldman, she won the gold medal in the exhibition event, held in Mexico City, and the silver medal in the demonstration event, held in Guadalajara. The Italian Riviera Championships also known as the San Remo International was a combined men's and women's clay court tennis tournament founded in 1903 at San Remo, Liguria, Northern Italy. The tournament was staged at the Tennis Club Sanremo (f.1897) until 1964, and was part of the Italian Riviera circuit of tennis tournaments.
