Heath Brothers
The Heath Brothers was an American jazz group, formed in 1975 in Philadelphia, by the brothers Jimmy Heath, Jimmy (tenor saxophone), Percy Heath, Percy (bass), and Tootie Heath, Albert "Tootie" Heath (drums); and pianist Stanley Cowell. Tony Purrone (guitar) and Jimmy's son James Mtume, Mtume (percussion) joined the group later. Tootie left in 1978, and was replaced by Akira Tana for a short period, before returning in 1982. They also added other sidemen for some of their recording dates. The group issued four singles between 1978 and 1981, "Mellowdrama", "For the Public", "Use it (Don't Abuse it)" and "Dreamin'". "Dreamin'", a track from the 1980 LP, "Expressions of Life", had the most airplay in the UK despite not reaching the UK chart. The group with just two of the brothers, Jimmy and Tootie, and additional sidemen as needed, continued to perform and record after Percy died in 2004. Strata-East Records Artists
Strata-East Records is an American record company and label specialising in jazz founded in 1971 by Charles Tolliver and Stanley Cowell with the release of their first recording ''Music Inc.'' The label released over 50 albums in the 1970s. Many of the label's releases are now hailed as prime examples of 1970s post-bop, spiritual jazz, and afro-jazz. Gil Scott-Heron recorded his 1974 album ''Winter in America'' with Brian Jackson for Strata-East. "The Bottle" featured on the album, was a popular single. This album stands as one of the label's best-known recordings. Clifford Jordan and Bill Lee, father of Spike Lee, were involved in many releases. Concord Records is an American record label owned by Concord and based in Los Angeles, California. Concord Records was launched in 1995 as an imprint designed to reach beyond the company's foundational Concord Jazz label. The label's artists have won 14 GRAMMY Awards and 88 GRAMMY nominations. The original logo, a stylized eighth note incorporating the C and J of "Concord Jazz", was created by Bay Area graphic designer Dan Buck, who also worked on several album covers for the company. Antilles Records
Antilles Records was a record label founded as a division of Island Records. It began as a jazz label, recording Joanne Brackeen, Biréli Lagrène, and Phil Woods, though its catalogue did expand to include eclectic musicians like Brian Eno and Robert Fripp. It was the first to introduce the Slits and Nick Drake to American audiences. One of its founders was Jeff Walker, an employee at Island and the first A&R director for Antilles. In the 1990s, Antilles recorded Peter Apfelbaum, Johnny Griffin, Frank Morgan, Steve Turre, and Randy Weston. Polygram bought Island, Seagram's bought Polygram, and by the end of the decade Antilles stopped recording jazz.
