Heartsease (Hillsborough, North Carolina)
Heartsease is a historic home located at Hillsborough, Orange County, North Carolina. It was built about 1770, and consists of a -story, three-bay, central block dating to the late 18th century, with an early 19th-century -story east wing, and two-story pedimented west wing added in the late 19th century. It is topped by a gable roof and features a shed porch whose roof supported by plain Tuscan order posts. It is believed that Heartsease served as the pre-Revolutionary home of Thomas Burke, North Carolina's third governor and a member of the Constitutional Convention. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1973. Hillsborough, North Carolina
The town of Hillsborough is the county seat of Orange County, North Carolina, United States and is located along the Eno River. The population was 6,087 in 2010, but it grew rapidly to 9,660 by 2020. Its name was unofficially shortened to "Hillsboro" during the 19th century. In the late 1960s, residents voted to change the name back to its original, historic spelling. The Tuscan order (Latin ''Ordo Tuscanicus'' or ''Ordo Tuscanus'', with the meaning of Etruscan order) is one of the two classical orders developed by the Romans, the other being the composite order. It is influenced by the Doric order, but with un-fluted columns and a simpler entablature with no triglyphs or guttae. Thomas Burke (North Carolina)
Thomas Burke (''circa'' 1747December 2, 1783) was an Irish physician, lawyer, and statesman who lived in Hillsborough, North Carolina. He represented North Carolina as a delegate to the Continental Congress and was the third governor of the state. He was the first Catholic governor of North Carolina. Biography Burke was born in Tiaquin, County Galway, Ireland, around 1747. By 1764, he had emigrated. Thomas went to Virginia and practiced medicine for several years. He studied law and began his practice in Norfolk, Virginia. He became an early supporter of the American Revolution, writing tracts in opposition to the Stamp Act. In 1774, he moved to Hillsborough, North Carolina. Burke's neighbors made him a member of the Fifth North Carolina Provincial Congress that met in Halifax in 1776.
