Heartland New Zealand Party
Heartland New Zealand is a New Zealand political party founded in 2020. The party is rural-based, and opposes the New Zealand Emissions Trading Scheme, the Paris Agreement, and attempts to limit the environmental impacts of agriculture. The party is led by former Franklin District mayor Mark Ball, who is the party's candidate for Port Waikato. It is backed by Hamilton entrepreneur Harry Mowbray, father of Nick Mowbray, a billionaire who, with his siblings, was on the 2019 NBR Rich List. History Heartland did not apply for a broadcasting allocation for the 2020 election, which was allocated in May 2020. The party applied for registration with the Electoral Commission in July, and was registered on 6 August 2020. Nick Mowbray
Nicholas James Mowbray (born March 1985) is a New Zealand entrepreneur and businessperson. Together with his brother Mat, he is the co-founder of toy and consumer products manufacturer ZURU. Early life Mowbray grew up in Cambridge, New Zealand, and was educated at St Peter's School. His parents owned a dairy farm and Matangi dairy factory. As a teenager, he helped his elder brother Mat to manufacture hot air balloons from Coke cans and plastic bags. After school, he started a law degree but dropped out in his first year. ZURU In 2003, when the brothers were 18 and 22, they made a snap decision and moved to Hong Kong to set up a toy factory. Overhang Seat
Overhang seats are constituency seats won in an election under the traditional mixed member proportional (MMP) system (as it originated in Germany), when a party's share of the nationwide votes would entitle it to fewer seats than the number of individual constituencies won. How overhang seats arise Under MMP, a party is entitled to a number of seats based on its share of the total vote. If a party's share entitles it to ten seats and its candidates win seven constituencies, it will be awarded three list seats, bringing it up to its required number. This only works, however, if the party's seat entitlement is not less than the number of constituencies it has won. If, for example, a party is entitled to five seats, but wins six constituencies, the sixth constituency seat is referred to as an overhang seat. Vision NZ is a nationalist political party in New Zealand led by Hannah Tamaki, the co-leader of the fundamentalist Christian movement Destiny Church. The party was announced in May 2019. 2020 New Zealand General Election
The 2020 New Zealand general election was held on Saturday 17 October 2020 to determine the composition of the 53rd parliament. Voters elected 120 members to the House of Representatives, 72 from single-member electorates and 48 from closed party lists. Two referendums, one on the personal use of cannabis and one on euthanasia, were also held on the same day. Official results of the election and referendums were released on 6 November. The governing Labour Party, led by incumbent Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern, won the election in a landslide victory against the National Party, led by Judith Collins. Labour won 65 seats, enough for a majority government. Mark Robert Ball is a New Zealand politician and former police officer. He was mayor of the Franklin District, in the Auckland region, for six years until the position was disestablished in 2010. He currently serves as leader of the Heartland New Zealand Party. Early life Ball was a police officer for 17 years, policing the South Auckland area. He later owned a business, which he sold when elected as a mayor.
