Heartbeat (Jimmy Somerville Song)
"Heartbeat" is a song by Scottish pop singer-songwriter Jimmy Somerville, formerly the lead vocalist of the bands Bronski Beat and Communards. Released in January 1995 as the first single from his second solo album, ''Dare to Love'' (1995), it peaked at #24 on the UK Singles Chart in February of that year and at #15 in his native Scotland. The song also topped the US '' Billboard'' Hot Dance Club Play for one week in April 1995, becoming Somerville's first (and, to date, only) solo #1 on that chart. Backing vocals on the song are performed by American dance music singers Shawn Christopher and Yvonne Gage. Critical reception In his weekly UK chart commentary, James Masterton wrote, "This new single marks his re-emergence from a musical lay-off with an inoffensive piece of Hi-NRG pop but not a record that is destined to make major waves on the chart." Jimmy Somerville
James William Somerville (born 22 June 1961) is a Scottish pop singer and songwriter. He sang in the 1980s with the pop groups Bronski Beat and The Communards, and has also had a solo career. He is known in particular for his powerful and soulful countertenor/falsetto singing voice. Many of his songs, such as "Smalltown Boy", contain political commentary on gay-related issues. Early life Born on 22 June, 1961, James William Somerville grew up in Ruchill, a neighbourhood of northern Glasgow. In 1980 he moved to London, where he lived in squats. He immersed himself in gay culture, and attended the London Gay Teenage Group. Career In 1983, Somerville co-founded the synthpop group Bronski Beat, which had several hits in the British charts. Yvonne Gage (born December 20, 1959) is an American singer from Chicago, Illinois. Active since the late 1970s, she has done background vocals for artists prior to and after her own solo success. As a session musician, she has provided vocals for many well known artists, including the incomparable Queen of Soul - Aretha Franklin, Stevie Wonder, Michael McDonald, The Doobie Brothers, Ministry, Celine Dion, Ashford & Simpson, Kem, Janelle MonĂ¡e, and Kindred the Family Soul. Eric Miller (born in Chicago, Illinois) is an Americans, American house music disc jockey, DJ, record producer and remixer. As E-Smoove, he worked for a number of years with Steve "Silk" Hurley and Maurice Joshua, before he hit the United States, U.S. Hot Dance Music/Club Play record chart, chart in 1998 with "Deja Vu", which climbed to #16. The song reached #63 in the UK Singles Chart. His next U.S. dance chart entry came in 2002, when "Insatiable" hit #1. "Insatiable" was released under the pseudonym Thick Dick.
