"Heart of Gold" is a song by Canadian singer-songwriter Neil Young. From his fourth album ''Harvest'', it is Young's only U.S. No. 1 single. In Canada, it reached No. 1 on the ''RPM'' national singles chart for the first time on April 8, 1972, on which date Young held the top spot on both the singles and albums charts. ''Billboard'' ranked it as the No. 17 song for 1972. In 2004, ''Rolling Stone'' ranked it No. 297 on their list of the 500 greatest songs of all time, No. 303 in an updated 2010 list, and No. 259 in 2021. Description The song, which features backup vocals by James Taylor and Linda Ronstadt, is one of a series of soft acoustic pieces which were written partly as a result of a back injury. Heart Of Gold Band
The Heart of Gold Band is an American rock band formed by Keith and Donna Jean Godchaux in 1980 following their departure from the Grateful Dead. The band took its name from a line in the Dead song " Scarlet Begonias". Original Run The Heart of Gold Band was formed in early 1980, shortly after Keith and Donna Godchaux had left the Grateful Dead in 1979. Other founding members of the group were guitarist Steve Kimock, drummer Greg Anton, bassist Dexter LaBlanc, and vocalist Greta Rose. Keith Godchaux was killed in a car accident on July 23, 1980, just a few days after the band's first gig. The band continued on for another year, adding keyboardist Mark Adler and replacing Dexter LaBlanc with Donna Godchaux's future husband, David MacKay, before disbanding. A self-titled CD was released in 1998, containing 13 tracks recorded by the original band, 11 of them prior to Keith Godchaux's death. Ashlyne Anderson Huff (born August 28, 1985) is an American singer, songwriter and dancer. She is the daughter of Nashville record producer and session-guitarist Dann Huff, the granddaughter of Nashville arranger Ron Huff and the niece of Giant and White Heart drummer David Huff. Early life As a child Huff took dance lessons and musical classes. Huff won an award at the ''Actors, Models and Talent for Christ (AMTC)'' 2004 Winter Convention in the category 'Overall Dancer'. She then headed to the Belmont University and enrolled in the Belmont University Music Business program where she studied publishing and copyright law. Background "Heart of Gold" is an acoustic ballad in half-time. Music critic John Mendelsohn describes it as being country music-ish. ''Musician'' magazine finds the guitar work reminiscent of the Kinks earlier album ''Muswell Hillbillies''. It was, according to Ray Davies, written about the birth of his and Pretenders front woman Chrissie Hynde's daughter, Natalie, in 1983. According to Davies, it was also inspired by a comment by Anne, Princess Royal in which she told intrusive photographers to "naff off."
