Heart Peterborough
Heart Peterborough (formerly Hereward FM) was an Independent Local Radio station serving Cambridgeshire, south Lincolnshire and west Norfolk. Launched on 10 July 1980 as Hereward Radio 225, the station was the first local service in the area, with the studios originally based in the back of a former pub in Bridge Street, Peterborough, before relocating to the Queensgate shopping centre in the city in 1987. History With the tagline of ''the station you can really call your own'', Hereward Radio began on 95.7 MHz and 225 metres/1332 kHz. Reorganisation of the FM broadcast band moved the station to 102.7 since around 1987/1988, with BBC Radio Cambridgeshire using the former frequency for the Peterborough area. Notable personalities from the past include the former chief executive of GCap Media, Ralph Bernard, who was the station's first news editor. Peterborough
Peterborough () is a cathedral city in Cambridgeshire, east of England. It is the largest part of the City of Peterborough unitary authority district (which covers a larger area than Peterborough itself). It was part of Northamptonshire until 1974, when county boundary change meant the city became part of Cambridgeshire instead. The city is north of London, on the River Nene which flows into the North Sea to the north-east. In 2020 the built-up area subdivision had an estimated population of 179,349. In 2021 the Unitary Authority area had a population of 215,671. The local topography is flat, and in some places, the land lies below sea level, for example in parts of the Fens to the east and to the south of Peterborough. BBC Radio Cambridgeshire
BBC Radio Cambridgeshire is the BBC's local radio station serving the county of Cambridgeshire. It broadcasts on FM, DAB, digital TV and via BBC Sounds from studios at the Cambridge Business Park on Cowley Road in Cambridge. According to RAJAR, the station has a weekly audience of 87,000 listeners and a 6.9% share as of September 2022. Original schedule Radio Cambridgeshire began broadcasting on 1 May 1982 and was originally known as Radio Cambridge and Radio Peterborough. It was originally based at studios on Hills Road, close to Cambridge railway station. Under the first manager, Hal Bethell, Radio Cambridgeshire's early broadcasts were restricted to a few hours at breakfast and two hours in the afternoon. The opening day was broadcast from Cambridge and all the district offices at Peterborough, Wisbech, March, Huntingdon and Ely. Heart Cambridge
Heart 103 (formerly Q103) is an Independent Local Radio station broadcasting to Cambridge on 103.0 MHz and DAB Digital Radio. Heart also broadcast in Newmarket and Haverhill on 97.4 MHz. History The station was originally owned by Mid-Anglia Radio and began life as CNFM (Cambridge and Newmarket FM) in February 1989, before being renamed to Q103 FM in June 1994 when it was acquired by the GWR Group. In 2004 the name was slightly adjusted to Q103 Cambridge after their launch on DAB Digital Radio. On 1 August 2007, Q103 reverted to their 2004 strapline of "Today's Best Mix", also dropping the "Cambridge" from their name to reflect the newly extended TSA area (covering Haverhill and the longly served Newmarket on the Cambridgeshire- Suffolk border). It was listed on the London Stock Exchange and was a constituent of the FTSE 250 Index. On 31 March 2008 the company agreed a takeover by Global Radio for £375 million. WGMS - The World's Greatest Music Station
The Worlds Greatest Music Station (or WGMS) was the AM sister station to Hereward FM. Its time on-air was short lived and restricted to approximately two years when both local ILR stations were acquired by the GWR group in the 1990s. History Originally, Hereward Radio (which launched on 10 July 1980) broadcast on both on FM and 1332 AM. On 14 April 1992 the station split its AM and FM frequencies, with Hereward FM just broadcasting on 102.7 FM and The Worlds Greatest Music Station launching on 1332 AM. WGMS was short-lived, as around 1994, it was purchased by the GWR Group and then re-branded as Classic Gold 1332. Owing to going over the limits of the number of stations a group can own, GWR sold their "Classic Gold" stations, and they were bought by UBC Media, although GWR did keep a 20% stake. Queensgate Shopping Centre, United Kingdom
The Queensgate shopping centre is located in the centre of the UK city of Peterborough, in Cambridgeshire. It contains over 100 stores and parking for 2,300 cars in four onsite multi-storey car parks. Queensgate bus station is located within the shopping centre and only a short walk from Peterborough railway station. Peterborough Shop Mobility provide wheelchairs and electric scooters to help those with limited mobility. The centre was opened by Queen Beatrix of the Netherlands on 9 March 1982. Independent Local Radio is the collective name given to commercial radio stations in the United Kingdom. As a result of the buyouts and mergers permitted by the Broadcasting Act 1990, and deregulation resulting from the Communications Act 2003, most commercial stations are now neither independent (although they remain independent from the BBC) nor local.
