''Heart of the West'' is a 1936 American Western film directed by Howard Bretherton and written by Doris Schroeder. Howard Bretherton
Howard Bretherton (13 February 1890, in Tacoma, Washington – 12 April 1969, in San Diego, California) was an American film director, film editor, and the father of film editor David Bretherton. Career He began his career as a propman and then became a film editor during the early 1920s for MGM. He directed his first film, ''While London Sleeps'', in 1926, and thereafter spent more than three decades working mostly as a film director. Of the roughly 100 pictures he directed, most of them were westerns and action/adventure films. The final film he directed was ''Night Raiders (1952 film), Night Raiders'' in 1952. Afterwards, he occasionally worked as a director in television through 1958. Jack Rutherford (April 12, 1893 – August 21, 1982) was a British film and television actor. Rutherford first appeared in British films in leading or prominent supporting roles during the silent era. Hopalong Cassidy Films
From 1935 to 1948, 66 American Western films were produced featuring the character Hopalong Cassidy, played in all the films by actor William Boyd. The films were at the time collectively known as "Hoppies". In the films, Hopalong, or "Hoppy", and his white horse, Topper, travel through the Old West while dispensing justice, usually with two companions: one young and trouble-prone with a weakness for damsels in distress, the other older, comically awkward and outspoken. The juvenile lead was successively played by James Ellison, Russell Hayden, George Reeves, Rand Brooks, and Jimmy Rogers. George Hayes (later to become known as "Gabby" Hayes) originally played Cassidy's grizzled sidekick, Windy Halliday. Robert McKenzie (September 22, 1880 – July 8, 1949) was an Irish-born American film actor. He appeared in more than 310 films between 1915 and 1946. McKenzie was married to the actress Eva McKenzie until his death from a heart attack in 1949. The two appeared as husband and wife in The Three Stooges' film ''The Yoke's on Me''. Richard Theodore Adams (March 17, 1890 – September 24, 1973) was an American film actor who appeared in nearly 200 films between 1926 and 1952. Early life Adams was born in New York City. He appeared with his parents in their vaudeville act and later attended Cornell University. He served in World War I and World War II in the US Navy. Career Adams' film career spanned more than three decades and included roles "on both sides of the law". He worked primarily in B-Westerns, often as a villain. Studios for which he worked included Monogram and PRC, and he was often seen in films that starred Johnny Mack Brown or Bob Steele.
