Franklin, Georgia
Franklin is a city in Heard County, Georgia, United States. The population was 993 at the 2010 census, up from 902 at the 2000 census. Franklin is the county seat of Heard County. The city is named after Benjamin Franklin. History Franklin was settled in 1770, and was designated seat of the newly formed Heard County in 1831. The town was hit by a tornado just before midnight on March 25, 2021, with multiple areas in downtown being heavily damaged with the most severe damage being rated high-end EF2. The tornado later became violent and hit nearby Newnan, Georgia to the east at EF4 strength, indirectly killing one person. Geography Franklin is located in central Heard County at , along the Chattahoochee River. U.S. Route 27 passes through the east side of the city on a bypass, leading north to Carrollton and south to LaGrange. Heard County is a county located in the west central portion of the U.S. state of Georgia. At the 2020 census, the population was 11,412, down from 11,834 in 2010. The county seat is Franklin. The county was created on December 22, 1830. Heard County is included in the Atlanta-Sandy Springs-Roswell, GA Metropolitan Statistical Area. History Heard County was created by Act of the Legislature on December 22, 1830. It was named for Stephen Heard, elected President of the Council on February 18, 1781, thus, in the absence of Governor Howley, becoming Governor ''de facto''. Heard moved to Wilkes County from Hanover County, Virginia, and fought in the American Revolutionary War where he distinguished himself at Kettle Creek. Centralhatchee, Georgia
Centralhatchee is a small village in Heard County, Georgia, United States. The population was 408 at the 2010 census. History The town of Centralhatchee was originally a militia district known as "Black Ankle". The community of Glenloch, to the north, was known as "Blue Shin". The geographic configuration of these two communities, according to Native American legend, resembled the ankle and shin portion of the leg and foot. The town became part of Heard County when the county was formed from parts of Carroll, Troup and Coweta counties in 1830. The town was chartered in 1903 with the name "Centralhatchee". Corinth is an unincorporated community and former incorporated town in Coweta and Heard counties in the U.S. state of Georgia. The population was 213 at the 2000 census. History The Georgia General Assembly incorporated the place in 1839 as the "Town of Corinth". The community's name is a transfer from Ancient Corinth, in Greece. Heard County High School
Heard County High School is a public high school in Franklin, Georgia, United States, part of the Heard County School District. The school's mascot is the Brave. History The school was originally known as Franklin High School when there were two high schools in the county. However, after Centralhatchee High School closed in 1954, it was renamed to Heard County High School. The school grounds originally consisted of a small music building, three classrooms, and an auditorium. However, at this time the school served ten grades and 150 students. In the 1950s, when the district consolidated, many of Heard County High School's buildings were made of rock.
