Headley Baxter
Headley Thomas Baxter (29 March 1919 — 31 August 2004) was a British tennis player and coach. He was active from 1939 to 1953 and contested 10 career singles finals and won 6 titles. Career A native of Middlesex, Baxter was the British junior champion in 1935 and 1936. He played his first senior event in 1938 at the Worthing Open where he reached the final, before losing to Alan Brown. In 1939 he won his first singles title at the Cranleigh Open against Guy Cooper. He won through to the singles third round of the 1947 Wimbledon Championships and took a set off third seed Tom Brown before being eliminated. During his playing career he was a member of British Davis Cup teams but was never called upon for a rubber. His career singles highlights include winning the Berkshire Championships three times in 1939, 1946 and 1947. He also won the Cumberland Hard Court Championships in 1948 against Dennis Slack. Davis Cup
The Davis Cup is the premier international team event in men's tennis. It is run by the International Tennis Federation (ITF) and is contested annually between teams from competing countries in a knock-out format. It is described by the organisers as the "World Cup of Tennis", and the winners are referred to as the World Champion team. The competition began in 1900 as a challenge between Great Britain and the United States. By 2016, 135 nations entered teams into the competition. The most successful countries over the history of the tournament are the United States (winning 32 titles and finishing as runners-up 29 times) and Australia (winning 28 titles, including six with New Zealand as Australasia, and finishing as runners-up 19 times). The ''Birmingham Post'' is a weekly printed newspaper based in Birmingham, England, with a circulation of 2,545 and distribution throughout the West Midlands. 1953 Wimbledon Championships – Men's Singles
In the 1953 Wimbledon Championships – Gentlemen's Singles, second seed Vic Seixas defeated the unseeded Kurt Nielsen in the final, 9–7, 6–3, 6–4, to take the gentlemen's singles tennis title. Frank Sedgman was the defending champion, but was ineligible to compete after turning professional. Progress of the competition It was the first of two Men's Singles competitions at Wimbledon in which an unseeded Nielsen had progressed to the final. On the way, he defeated both the number one seed Ken Rosewall and a favourite with the Wimbledon crowd, fourth-seeded Jaroslav Drobný, the latter in straight sets. Drobný's earlier third-round match against Budge Patty, came to be regarded as a classic in Wimbledon history. The match lasted for 93 games, and held the Wimbledon record for the longest match until 1969. Middlesex Championships
The Middlesex Championships. or Middlesex Lawn Tennis Championships and also known as the Middlesex Open Tennis Championships was a men's and women's grass court tennis founded at the Chiswick Park Lawn Tennis Club, Chiswick Park, Chiswick, Middlesex, Great Britain in 1884 and known as the Chiswick Park Club Open Lawn Tennis Tournament during the early editions of the event. The tournament was staged annually until 1949. History In 1883 William Cavendish, 7th Duke of Devonshire decided to lease some of his land, with a low annual ground rent for the residents Chiswick who wanted to establish a sports club.
