The Supremes were an American girl group and a premier act of Motown Records during the 1960s. Three Degrees
The Three Degrees is an American female vocal group formed circa 1963 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Although 16 women have been members over the years, the group has always been a trio. The current line-up consists of Helen Scott, Valerie Holiday, and Freddi Poole. The group were particularly successful in the UK, achieving 13 Top 50 hit singles between 1974 and 1985. The original members were Fayette Pinkney, Shirley Porter and Linda Turner. Porter and Turner were soon replaced by Janet Harmon and Helen Scott. The line-up from 1967 to 1976 was Pinkney, Valerie Holiday and Sheila Ferguson, who would go on to sing lead on most of the group's biggest hits. Cynthia Ann Birdsong (born December 15, 1939) is an American singer who became famous as a member of The Supremes in 1967, when she replaced co-founding member Florence Ballard. Birdsong had previously been a member of Patti LaBelle & The Bluebells. Biography Early life Birdsong was born in Mount Holly, New Jersey on December 15, 1939, to parents Lloyd Birdsong, Sr. and Annie Birdsong. After living in Philadelphia for a duration of her childhood, the family returned to New Jersey, settling in Camden. Birdsong set her sights on becoming a nurse and attending college in Pennsylvania. When Cindy returned to Philadelphia she was contacted by a longtime friend, Patsy Holt, in 1960 to replace Sundray Tucker in Holt's singing group The Ordettes. Scherrie Ann Payne (born November 4, 1944) is an American singer. Payne is best known as a member of the R&B/Soul vocal group The Supremes from 1973 until 1977. Because of her powerful voice and petite stature (5'2"), Payne is sometimes referred to as "the little lady with the big voice." Payne is the younger sister of singer Freda Payne. Payne continues to perform, both as a solo act and as a part of the " Former Ladies of the Supremes" (FLOS). ''Record Mirror'' was a British weekly music newspaper between 1954 and 1991 for pop fans and record collectors. Launched two years after the ''NME'', it never attained the circulation of its rival. The first UK album chart was published in ''Record Mirror'' in 1956, and during the 1980s it was the only consumer music paper to carry the official UK singles and UK albums charts used by the BBC for Radio 1 and ''Top of the Pops'', as well as the US ''Billboard'' charts. ''The Supremes'' is the twenty-seventh studio album by The Supremes, released in 1975 on Motown Records. Overview Because of contract disputes, nearly two and a half years passed between ''The Supremes'' and the previous Supremes LP, ''The Supremes Produced and Arranged by Jimmy Webb''. During that time, the group's lineup had undergone another major shift. Jean Terrell and Lynda Laurence both quit the group in August 1973, and remaining member and founding Supreme Mary Wilson was forced to form a new lineup. Cindy Birdsong was ready to return to the group after her maternity leave the previous year, and following a tip from former Supremes producer Lamont Dozier, Wilson hired Scherrie Payne, the younger sister of Freda Payne as the Supremes' new co-lead singer, who maintained the role until the group officially disbanded at a concert in London at the Theatre Royal, Drury Lane on June 12, 1977.
