Hayes Hardware Store
The Hayes Hardware Store is a historic commercial building at 314 DeQueen Street in downtown De Queen, Arkansas. It is a brick -story structure, sharing party walls with adjoining buildings on either side. Its brick facade is divided into two three-bay sections, with brick pilasters at the ends and in the center. Above the first-floor storefront windows is a clerestory level, above which is an attic space, where each of the six bays has a small oculus window. Above the second and fifth bays (the center bays of each group of three) is a rounded arch. The building was built c. 1900 by the Dierks Lumber and Coal Company, which built the De Queen and Eastern Railroad, making the city the commercial center of Sevier County. The building was acquired in 1908 by the Hayes Hardware Company. The placename is the anglicization of the family name of the Dutch merchant and railway financier, Jan de Goeijen (1861–1944). DeQueen Commercial Historic District
The DeQueen Commercial Historic District encompasses part of the commercial heart of downtown De Queen, Arkansas. The district is centered on the block containing the Sevier County Courthouse, a three-story brick Colonial Revival structure built in 1930. It includes buildings facing the courthouse square on West DeQueen Avenue, West Stilwell Avenue, and North Third Street, and extends an additional block eastward to North Second Street. This commercial heart of the city was developed mainly between 1900 and 1920, and includes 21 historically significant buildings. Sevier County is a county located in the U.S. state of Arkansas. As of the 2010 census, the population was 17,058. The county seat is De Queen. Sevier County is Arkansas's 16th county, formed on October 17, 1828, and named for Ambrose Sevier, U.S. Senator from Arkansas. On November 3, 2020, voters in Sevier County, AR approved alcohol sales by a vote of 3,499 (67.31 percent) to 1,699 (32.69 percent).
