Hayden Building (Boston)
The Hayden Building is a historic building at 681-683 Washington Street in Boston, Massachusetts. The building was built in 1875 and added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1980 as well as designated a Boston Landmark in 1977 Designed to act as commercial retail space, this four story brownstone building shows little of the ornamentation generally associated with Henry Hobson Richardson. It is the last surviving commercial retail building designed by Richardson in Boston. The building is in Boston's Chinatown neighborhood. Description The five story Richardsonian Romanesque building was built on a very narrow lot. It is constructed of Longmeadow brownstone and is sparsely detailed with granite lintels and arches. Background This building was not recorded as a Henry Hobson Richardson building until work done by architectural and landscape historian Cynthia Zaitzevsky made note of it in 1973. Richardsonian Romanesque Architecture In Massachusetts
Richardsonian Romanesque is a style of Romanesque Revival architecture named after the American architect Henry Hobson Richardson (1838–1886). The revival style incorporates 11th and 12th century southern French, Spanish, and Italian Romanesque characteristics. Richardson first used elements of the style in his Richardson Olmsted Complex in Buffalo, New York, designed in 1870. Multiple architects followed in this style in the late 19th century; Richardsonian Romanesque later influenced modern styles of architecture as well. Combat Zone, Boston
"Combat Zone" was the name given in the 1960s to the adult entertainment district in downtown Boston, Massachusetts. Centered on Washington Street (Boston), Washington Street between Boylston Street and Kneeland Street, the area was once the site of many strip clubs, peep shows, X rating, X-rated movie theaters, and adult bookstores. It had a reputation for crime, including prostitution. In 1974, in an attempt to contain the spread of adult businesses, the Boston Redevelopment Authority officially designated the Combat Zone as the city's adult entertainment district. For a variety of reasons, such as rising property values and the introduction of home video technology, most of the adult businesses in the area have since closed, and the "Combat Zone" moniker has become obsolete. Henry Hobson Richardson, FAIA (September 29, 1838 – April 27, 1886) was an American architect, best known for his work in a style that became known as Richardsonian Romanesque. Along with Louis Sullivan and Frank Lloyd Wright, Richardson is one of "the recognized trinity of American architecture". Biography Early life Richardson was born at the Priestley Plantation in St. James Parish, Louisiana, and spent part of his childhood in New Orleans, where his family lived on Julia Row in a red brick house designed by the architect Alexander T. Wood. He was the great-grandson of inventor and philosopher Joseph Priestley, who is usually credited with the discovery of oxygen. Richardson went on to study at Harvard College and Tulane University.
