Hay River (Canada)
The Hay River ( South Slavey: ) is a large river in northern Alberta and southern Northwest Territories, Canada. It originates in the muskeg of north western Alberta, flows west to British Columbia, then curves northward and returns to Alberta, where it follows a north-northeast course towards the Northwest Territories. After passing over two main waterfalls, the Alexandra Falls and Louise Falls, it flows through the town of Hay River and discharges into the Great Slave Lake. From there, its waters are carried to the Arctic Ocean by the Mackenzie River. Hay River has a total length of and a drainage area of . Tributaries of the Hay River are the Chinchaga River, Meander River (in South Slavey: ''Tahchee''), Steen River, Melvin River and Little Hay River. The Hay River effectively flows through the Hay-Zama Lakes. Rainbow Lake is a widening of the river itself. Indian Cabins is an unincorporated community in northern Alberta in Mackenzie County, located on Highway 35 and the Hay River, north of High Level, and south of the Northwest Territories-Alberta border. It is the northernmost community in Alberta. Zama Lake
Zama Lake is a large lake in Mackenzie County, in north-western Alberta, Canada. Major Ernest Wilson Hubbell, Chief Inspector of the Dominion Land Survey, recorded the name "Zammah River" in his field notes as the transliteration of the name of a Slavey Chief (Slavey Indians are now known as the Dene Tha' First Nation). The Geographic Board of Canada recorded the name "Zama River" on 4 July 1922 without explanation for the spelling change. The lake seems to be named in the same fashion and was named on 6 November 1944. The Dene Tha' do not use the name "Zama Lake", but use names in the Slavey language to identify the lake; some use ''K’ah Woti Túé'' (“Main Blind Lake” referring to a hunting blind) and others use ''Tulonh Mieh'' (“Where the Water Ends”).
