Hawker () ( postcode: 2614) is a suburb of the Belconnen district of Canberra, located within the Australian Capital Territory, Australia. The suburb of Hawker is named after Charles Hawker (1894–1938), Member of the House of Representatives from 1929 to 1938 and Federal minister in 1932. Streets in the suburb are named according to the theme of Northern Territory pastoral stations. Hawker, South Australia
Hawker is a town and a locality in the Flinders Ranges area of South Australia, north of Adelaide. It is in the Flinders Ranges Council, the state Electoral district of Stuart and the federal Division of Grey. At the 2016 census, the locality had a population of 341 of which 237 lived in its town centre. History The town was surveyed during March 1880 and was proclaimed on 1 July 1880. It was named after G. C. Hawker who was a member of the South Australian Parliament for the years 1858–1865 and 1875–1883. The locality's boundaries were gazetted on 25 November 1999 and include the Government Towns of Wonoka, Hawker and Chapmanton. Portions of Hawker were added to the adjoining localities of Flinders Ranges and Shaggy Ridge on 26 November 2013. The Division of Hawker was an Australian Electoral Division in South Australia. The division was created in 1969 and abolished in 1993. It was named for Charles Hawker, who was a federal MP 1929–38. It was located in the southern suburbs of Adelaide and took in the suburbs of Ascot Park, Clovelly Park, Edwardstown, Glenelg, Goodwood and Morphettville. Hawker was located between the seats of Hindmarsh and Kingston. Originally created as a marginal Liberal seat prior to the 1969 election on a notional 5.8 percent two-party margin, the seat was won by Labor's Ralph Jacobi on a 7.9 percent two-party margin from a 13.7 percent two-party swing. Hawker Island is an irregularly shaped island about long, lying some 7 km south-west of Davis Station between Mule Island and Mule Peninsula, Vestfold Hills, in the eastern part of Prydz Bay, Antarctica. Hawker Aircraft Limited was a British aircraft manufacturer that was responsible for some of the most famous products in British aviation history. History Hawker had its roots in the aftermath of the First World War, which resulted in the bankruptcy of the Sopwith Aviation Company. Sopwith test pilot Harry Hawker and three others, including Thomas Sopwith, bought the assets of Sopwith and formed H.G. Hawker Engineering in 1920. In 1933, the company was renamed Hawker Aircraft Limited, and it took advantage of the Great Depression and a strong financial position to purchase the Gloster Aircraft Company in 1934. Falconry is the hunting of wild animals in their natural state and habitat by means of a trained bird of prey. Small animals are hunted; squirrels and rabbits often fall prey to these birds. Established in 1976, Hawker has a non-selective enrolment policy and caters for students from year 11 through to year 12. History Hawker College is located on the site of the original Kama Homestead. Construction of Hawker College, which was undertaken at a cost of $3.3 million by Jennings Industries Ltd, began in January 1973 and was completed in December 1975.
