The Bristol Type 170 Freighter is a British twin-engine aircraft designed and built by the Bristol Aeroplane Company as both a freighter and airliner. Its best known use was as an air ferry to carry cars and their passengers over relatively short distances. A passenger-only version was also produced, known as the Wayfarer. The Freighter was developed during the Second World War, having attracted official attention from the British Air Ministry, which sought the development of a rugged vehicle capable of carrying various cargoes, including a 3-ton truck. Sandspit Airport is located northeast of Sandspit, British Columbia, Canada. Douglas DC-4 crash On January 19, 1952, a Douglas DC-4 on Northwest Orient Airlines Flight 324 attempted to land at Sandspit Airport due to a failed engine. Although the plane touched down on the runway, it lifted off again before coming to a halt. Unable to regain its lost speed and altitude, the aircraft hit the water about from the end of the runway. 36 of the 43 passengers and crew aboard died due to hypothermia or drowning. Sandspit ( hai, K'il Kun) is the largest community on Moresby Island, in Haida Gwaii off the Pacific coast of British Columbia, Canada. The only town on Moresby Island, Sandspit has accommodations, a campground, supermarket and 85-berth harbour serving visitors to Gwaii Haanas. The unincorporated community had a population of 296 as of the 2016 census, down from 297 in 2011.
