Hawick Trades
Hawick Trades is a former rugby union club based in Hawick, in the Scottish Borders. They played in the Border League until 2004. History The club began in 1946. It was founded after the Second War by Hawick apprentices; based on a Combined Trades team that came together during the Second World War. Association with Glynneath From 1956, Hawick Trades have had a close association with the Welsh club Glynneath RFC. Since that date the clubs have played each other, one year at home; the next away. Disbanding of the club At the start of the 2004–05 season the Border League announced that Hawick Trades would be withdrawn from the league as their lack of players meant that their fixtures would be unfulfilled. Since the club's demise, Hawick Trades now acts as a social club for former players. Scottish Rugby Union
The Scottish Rugby Union (SRU; gd, Aonadh Rugbaidh na h-Alba) is the governing body of rugby union in Scotland. Styled as Scottish Rugby, it is the second oldest Rugby Union, having been founded in 1873. The SRU oversees the national league system, known as the Scottish League Championship, and the Scottish National teams. The SRU is headed by the President ( Ian Barr) and Chairman (Colin Grassie), with Mark Dodson acting as the Chief Executive Officer. Greig Oliver
Greig Hunter Oliver (12 September 1964 – 3 July 2023) was a Scottish rugby union player turned development officer. Early life Oliver was born in Hawick, Scotland, and educated at Hawick High School and Napier College in Edinburgh. He worked as a sports sub-editor at the Southern Reporter. Playing career Oliver, then aged 18, made his first appearance for Hawick RFC in October 1982. He won honours for South of Scotland at junior, under-21 and senior levels, and earned his first senior international cap for Scotland at the inaugural 1987 Rugby World Cup as a replacement for Gary Armstrong in their 60–21 win against Zimbabwe, with Oliver scoring one try and becoming Hawick's 50th international player during the match. The following year, Oliver was part of the uncapped Scotland tour of Zimbabwe, scoring a hat-trick in the 31–10 win against Zimbabwe. Walkerburn Sevens
Walkerburn Sevens is an annual rugby sevens event held by Walkerburn RFC, in Walkerburn, Scotland. The Walkerburn Sevens was the sixth of the Border Sevens tournaments to be instated, in 1911, after the bigger events of the Border Sevens spring circuit. The Walkerburn Sevens is traditionally the last tournament of the Sevens season. Although other Sevens events were to join the Borders Sevens Circuit later, the Walkerburn Sevens has kept its view as a finale from the other tournaments. The other Borders Sevens tournaments combine in a Kings of the Sevens league; the Walkerburn tournament is called the ''Prince of the Sevens''. 2019's Walkerburn Sevens will be played on 25 May. Glasgow City Sevens
Glasgow City Sevens is an annual rugby sevens tournament held by Cartha Queens Park, in Dumbreck in the south side of Glasgow. The tournament was previously known as the Cartha Sevens and the Cartha Queens Park Sevens. History The first rugby sevens tournament started by Cartha RFC took place in April 1935 and continued for the following two years. After a break around the Second World War period the Sevens were reintroduced in 1950 and in has been played in all the subsequent years. The tournament became known as the Cartha Queens Park Sevens on the merger of Cartha and Queens Park F.P. in 1974. The tournament has been called the Glasgow City Sevens since 2005. Legacy Sevens competition Held around the start of every May, the tournament is part of the Legacy Sevens competition. Norman Pender
Norman Ewart Ker Pender (1 February 1948 – 24 August 2021) was a Scotland international rugby union player. After rugby, he became a Liberal Democrat councillor. He was found guilty of sexual assault in 2014. He died from a suspected heart attack in August 2021, at the age of 73. Scott MacLeod (rugby Union)
Scott MacLeod (born 3 March 1979 in Hawick) is a retired Scottish rugby union footballer. He last played as a lock for Newcastle Falcons. He is currently still an active part of that club, in a coaching role. Having retired from playing at the end of the 2016–16 season. MacLeod was introduced to rugby at the age of 21, having previously been a keen golfer and basketball player. He joined Hawick Trades before going on to play for Hawick RFC, with whom he won the BT Cellnet Cup in 2002 and from whom he joined The Borders professional team when it was set up that year. MacLeod represented the Borders at under-21 level, but left the Border Reivers to join Llanelli Scarlets for the 2006–07 season and made his debut for the West Wales team on a visit to Ulster on the opening weekend of the Magners League.
