Hawaii State Open
The Hawaii State Open is the Hawaii state open golf tournament, open to both amateur and professional golfers. It is organized by the Aloha section of the PGA of America. It was revived from an earlier event that evolved into the PGA Tour's Sony Open in Hawaii. It has been played annually since 1974 at a variety of courses around the state. Hawaii
Hawaii ( ; haw, Hawaii or ) is a state in the Western United States, located in the Pacific Ocean about from the U.S. mainland. It is the only U.S. state outside North America, the only state that is an archipelago, and the only state geographically located within the tropics. Golf is a club-and-ball sport in which players use various clubs to hit balls into a series of holes on a course in as few strokes as possible. Golf, unlike most ball games, cannot and does not use a standardized playing area, and coping with the varied terrains encountered on different courses is a key part of the game. Courses typically have either 18 or 9 ''holes'', regions of terrain that each contain a ''cup'', the hole that receives the ball. Each hole on a course contains a teeing ground to start from, and a putting green containing the cup. Steve Veriato
Steve Veriato (born May 6, 1946) is an American professional golfer. He played on the PGA Tour, Asia Golf Circuit, Canadian Tour, and Champions Tour where he won once. Veriato was born in Hilo, Hawaii. He played college golf at Texas A&M University and turned professional in 1973. Veriato played on the PGA Tour from 1976 to 1980. His best ever finish was a solo 2nd at the 1977 Atlanta Classic. He was then primarily a club pro in Texas for 14 years. Concurrent with his experience as a club pro, however, he also occasionally played on some minor international circuits. He played the Canadian Tour in 1988 and 1989 and the Asia Golf Circuit in 1975, 1988, 1989, and 1995. He joined the Senior PGA Tour after he turned 50. In 2001, he won the 2001 Novell Utah Showdown. David Ishii
David S. Ishii (born July 26, 1955) is an American professional golfer of Japanese descent. Early life Ishii grew up on the island of Kauai in Hawaii and graduated from Kauai High School. As a junior in high school, he won the Hawaii State High School Championship. Amateur career Ishii played his collegiate golf at the University of Houston from 1974 to 1977. He won four individual events, was a member of the 1977 NCAA Championship team, and was a 1977 All-American. Professional career He turned professional in 1979. He led the money list on the Japan Golf Tour in 1987. He has 14 victories on the Japan Golf Tour and is 13th on the career money list. Ishii won the inaugural Kapalua Open in 1982 and also won the 1990 Hawaiian Open, a PGA Tour event. He was the second Hawaiian native to win the event, after Ted Makalena in 1966.
