Hawa Mahal, Visakhapatnam
Hawa Mahal meaning 'palace of winds' is a summer residential palace of the royal family of Kingdom of Jeypore, Jeypore. It was built in 1917-1923 by Maharaja Ram Chandra Dev IV at Beach Road, Visakhapatnam. It is considered one of the most iconic historical buildings of the city. It is owned by the Maharaja of Jeypore. History The foundation of this iconic beach palace was laid down by Maharajah Ram Chandra Dev IV in 1917. It was built as a summer resort and often a transit halt for the Maharajas of Jeypore when they travelled to the capital of the presidency in Chennai, Madras. The Raja of Salur owned a sea-facing land which was purchased by the Maharaja of Jeypore for constructing the palace. There was an uneven hillock on the acquired land which was levelled and the front land was filled up in order to build the palace above sea-level. Indo-Saracenic Architecture
Indo-Saracenic architecture (also known as Indo-Gothic, Mughal-Gothic, Neo-Mughal, or Hindoo style) was a revivalist architectural style mostly used by British architects in India in the later 19th century, especially in public and government buildings in the British Raj, and the palaces of rulers of the princely states. It drew stylistic and decorative elements from native Indo-Islamic architecture, especially Mughal architecture, which the British regarded as the classic Indian style, and, less often, from Hindu temple architecture. The basic layout and structure of the buildings tended to be close to that used in contemporary buildings in other revivalist styles, such as Gothic revival and Neo-Classical, with specific Indian features and decoration added. The style drew from western exposure to depictions of Indian buildings from about 1795, such as those by William Hodges and the Daniell duo (William Daniell and his uncle Thomas Daniell).
