Dick Morrissey
Richard Edwin Morrissey (9 May 1940 – 8 November 2000) was a British jazz musician and composer. He played the tenor saxophone, soprano saxophone and flute. Biography Background He was born in Horley, Surrey, England. Dick Morrissey emerged in the early 1960s in the wake of Tubby Hayes, Britain’s pre-eminent sax player at the time. Self-taught, he started playing clarinet in his school band, The Delta City Jazzmen, at the age of sixteen with fellow pupils Robin Mayhew (trumpet), Eric Archer (trombone), Steve Pennells (banjo), Glyn Greenfield (drums), and young brother Chris on tea-chest bass. He then joined the Original Climax Jazz Band. Going on to join trumpeter Gus Galbraith's Septet, where alto-sax player Peter King introduced him to Charlie Parker's recordings, he began specialising on tenor saxophone shortly after. Jazz
Jazz is a music genre that originated in the African-American communities of New Orleans, Louisiana in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, with its roots in blues and ragtime. Since the 1920s Jazz Age, it has been recognized as a major form of musical expression in traditional and popular music. Jazz is characterized by swing and blue notes, complex chords, call and response vocals, polyrhythms and improvisation. Jazz has roots in European harmony and African rhythmic rituals. As jazz spread around the world, it drew on national, regional, and local musical cultures, which gave rise to different styles. 77 Records was a British record company and label established in 1957 by Doug Dobell, the proprietor of 'Dobell's Jazz Record Shop' at 77 Charing Cross Road, London. The label specialised in folk, blues, and jazz. Several British jazz musicians, such as Acker Bilk, Bruce Turner, Tubby Hayes, Les Condon, Dick Morrissey, Brian Lemon and Buck Clayton, recorded on the label in the mid-1960s. British rhythm and blues performers such as Alexis Korner also recorded for 77 Records, as did many American artists. 77 Records distributed the releases of US labels, including recordings by Ramblin' Jack Elliott, Lightnin' Hopkins, Scrapper Blackwell, Reverend Gary Davis, Robert Pete Williams, Big Joe Williams, Sunnyland Slim, Joe Turner, Little Brother Montgomery, Yank Rachell, and Sleepy John Estes. Doug Dobell
Douglas Arthur Dobell (1917 – 10 July 1987) was a British record store proprietor and record producer who ran Dobell's Record Shop in Charing Cross Road, London, and 77 Records. He was involved in developing, recording and marketing jazz, blues, folk and world music in the UK, from the 1950s to the 1980s. Background Dobell was born in London in 1917. He was the grandson of Bertram Dobell (1842–1914), who had been born of Huguenot descent in Battle, Sussex. Bertram Dobell opened a stationer's shop in London in 1869, and began selling second-hand books, establishing his first antiquarian bookshop on Charing Cross Road in 1887. He acquired, and published in 1906, lost manuscripts by the poet Thomas Traherne. After his death, his premises on Charing Cross Road were taken over by his sons, Percy and Arthur Dobell. ''It's Morrissey, Man!'' is an album by saxophonist Dick Morrissey. It was recorded on 27 April 1961. It was Morrissey's first album as a leader. The liner notes were written by Benny Green. In 1998, Polygram's Redial division, run by Richard Cook, reissued the album as a CD. Reception A contemporaneous ''Jazz Journal'' review commented: "Morrissey is well able to sustain interest over several choruses, and builds his solos excellently. Jones n pianois far less impressive, and his solos are almost invariably an anticlimax. Cecil and Barnes ass and drumswork together well, and provide a driving beat." Four decades later, a ''Daily Telegraph'' writer stated that the album had "caused a great stir among musicians and jazz insiders but failed to register greatly with the wider jazz public". Harry South
Harry Percy South (7 September 1929 – 12 March 1990) was an English jazz pianist, composer, and arranger, who moved into work for film and television. Career South was born in Fulham, London. He came to prominence in the 1950s, playing with Joe Harriott, Dizzy Reece, Tony Crombie, and Tubby Hayes. In 1954, he was in the Tony Crombie Orchestra with Dizzy Reece, Les Condon (trumpet), Joe Temperley, Sammy Walker (tenor sax), Lennie Dawes (baritone sax), and Ashley Kozak (bass). Phil Bates (jazz Musician)
Philip "Phil" Francis Bates (born 19 June 1931) is an English jazz double bassist. Bates was born in Brixton, Brixton, London. After playing regular gigs at London’s 51 Club with Harry Klein and Vic Ash throughout 1956, he joined The Jazz Couriers with Tubby Hayes and Ronnie Scott. After the Couriers disbanded, Bates toured with Sarah Vaughan and played with the Lennie Metcalfe Band on the Cunard liner the RMS Mauretania (1938), RMS Mauretania. In the early 1960s he worked with Johnny Dankworth and Ronnie Ross, among others, before joining Dick Morrissey's Quartet from October 1962 until 1968. During that period he also played with the Harry South Big Band, as did the other members of the quartet, and with the Tony Kinsey Quintet. In 1968 he played briefly again with Tubby Hayes. Jackie Dougan
Jackie Dougan (1930, Greenock, Scotland – 27 January 1973, New South Wales, Australia) was a British jazz drummer. A member of Tommy Whittle's and Eddie Thompson's groups in the 1950s, he joined the Dick Morrissey Quartet in the early 1960s. He joined the Ronnie Scott Quartet, along with another early Dick Morrissey Quartet member, Malcolm Cecil. Following his stint with Scott, he joined the Tony Coe Quintet and later recorded with Stan Tracey (on the ''Jazz Suite Inspired by Dylan Thomas's "Under Milk Wood"'' album, 1965), Sonny Stitt, Ben Webster, Al Cohn and Zoot Sims.
