Haus Der Berliner Festspiele
The Haus der Berliner Festspiele is a theater in Berlin (Schaperstraße 24, 10719 Berlin). It was opened on 1 May 1963 as the "Theater der Freien Volksbühne". Previously, the West Berlin part of the former Volksbühne Berlin, the , which was founded in 1948, had used the as its venue from 1949 to 1963. Under the direction of Erwin Piscator, the theatre moved into its own new building in 1963. The architect was Fritz Bornemann, who also designed the Deutsche Oper Berlin and the America Memorial Library in Berlin, among others. Rolf Hochhuth's tragedy '' Der Stellvertreter'', which Intendant Piscator had premiered at the Theater am Kurfürstendamm in February 1963, was reopened here on 1 July 1963. Under artistic director (1973–1986), directors such as Peter Zadek, Klaus Michael Grüber and Hans Neuenfels offered avant-garde and risk-taking productions without a permanent ensemble. Peter Zadek
Peter Zadek (; 19 May 1926 – 30 July 2009) was a German director of theatre, opera and film, a translator and a screenwriter. He is regarded as one of the greatest directors in German-speaking theater. Biography Peter Zadek was born on 19 May 1926 to a Jewish family in Berlin. In 1934, he emigrated with his family to London where he later studied at Old Vic theatre, after a year at Oxford University. He began in weekly rep in Swansea and Pontypridd. He studied at the Old Vic, and his first productions included Oscar Wilde’s '' Salome'' and T. S. Eliot’s ''Sweeney Agonistes''. Zadek caused a stir in London in the late 1950s with his productions of works by Jean Genet. Indeed, Genet was so outraged by Zadek's world première of ''The Balcony'' at the Arts in 1957 that he apparently bought a gun with the intention of shooting its director. Berlin International Literature Festival
The Berlin International Literature Festival (german: internationales literaturfestival berlin) or ''ilb'' is an annual event based in Berlin. Every September, the festival presents contemporary poetry, prose, nonfiction, graphic novels and international children's and young adult literature. The Berliner Theatertreffen (''Theatertreffen'' : neologism literally meaning "theatre encounter" or "theatre meeting" ) is a two-week long theatre festival occurring yearly in May in Berlin, Germany. It is a product of the Berliner Festspiele corporation, funded by the Federal Cultural Foundation (''Kulturstiftung des Bundes'') of Germany. During the festival, those ten theatre pieces within the German-speaking realm that have premiered in the previous season and have been voted most noteworthy by the festival jury of seven drama critics are presented on various stages in Berlin. The Berliner Festspiele (German for Berlin Festivals) are a series of festivals, art exhibitions, and other cultural events organized all year long by a common organization in Berlin. Events are held at the Haus der Berliner Festspiele, a pre-existing theatre devolved to that purpose in 2001, as well as at the Martin-Gropius-Bau and other venues. Hans Neuenfels (; 31 May 1941 – 6 February 2022) was a German writer, poet, film producer, librettist, theatre director, opera director and theatre manager. As a director, he first focused on drama, staged at prominent houses such as the Vienna Burgtheater, and became a leading exponent of German Regietheater. From 1974, he turned to opera, looking for "the subliminal of the music and the interlinear of the texts", for "surprisingly new, sometimes even disturbingly ambivalent perspectives on the works". Some of his opera productions caused controversies, such as Verdi's ''Aida'' at the Oper Frankfurt in 1980 where he staged the title character as a contemporary cleaning lady. ''The Deputy, a Christian tragedy'' (German: ''Der Stellvertreter. Ein christliches Trauerspiel''), also published in English as ''The Representative '', is a controversial 1963 play by Rolf Hochhuth which portrayed Pope Pius XII as having failed to take action or speak out against the Holocaust. Rolf Hochhuth
Rolf Hochhuth (; 1 April 1931 – 13 May 2020) was a German author and playwright, best known for his 1963 drama ''The Deputy'', which insinuates Pope Pius XII's indifference to Hitler's extermination of the Jews, and he remained a controversial figure both for his plays and other public comments and for his 2005 defense of British Holocaust denier David Irving. Life and career Youth Hochhuth was born in Eschwege, and was descended from a Protestant Hessian middle class family. His father was the owner of a shoe‐factory, which became bankrupt in the Depression. During World War II, he was a member of the Deutsches Jungvolk, a subdivision of the Hitler Youth. In 1948 he did an apprenticeship as a bookseller. Between 1950 and 1955 he worked in bookshops in Marburg, Kassel and Munich.
