Hasta La Vista (novel)
''Hasta La Vista'' is an Albanian novel written by Petro Marko in 1958. It widely encompasses the author's experience in the Spanish Civil War in which he was part of the International Brigades, Garibaldi Battalion. Plot The novel tells two interwoven, non-separated stories. The first revolves mainly around the Albanian members of the International Brigades, the horrors of war that they experience and also their personalities and personal philosophies. Among the characters are some notable Albanian figures like Skënder Luarasi, Asim Vokshi, Mehmet Shehu, and Petro Marko himself. During the events of the war some of the participants unable to cope with the horrors desert their battalions. In the novel the flaws of the characters such as their deserter tendencies are not hidden, for which the author was praised for. Petro Marko
Petro Marko (November 25, 1913 – December 27, 1991) was an Albanian writer. His best-known novel is titled '' Hasta La Vista'' and recounts his experiences as a volunteer of the Republican forces during the Spanish Civil War. Petro Marko is widely regarded as one of the founding fathers of modern Albanian prose. Life Petro Marko was born in Dhërmi, southern Albania in 1913. He started writing at the age of twenty and his first works were published in journals of the time with support from Ernest Koliqi his mentor. His articles would be published in periodicals as ''Lirija'', ''Shqipëria e Re'', ''Bota e Re'', and ''Koha e Re'' magazine since he was 20. From March 1, 1936 he became the editor of ''ABC'', a literary review which was banned by the monarchist authorities soon after, following with Marko being arrested and sent to internment. Albanian Language
Albanian ( endonym: or ) is an Indo-European language and an independent branch of that family of languages. International Brigades
The International Brigades ( es, Brigadas Internacionales) were military units set up by the Communist International to assist the Popular Front government of the Second Spanish Republic during the Spanish Civil War. The organization existed for two years, from 1936 until 1938. It is estimated that during the entire war, between 40,000 and 59,000 members served in the International Brigades, including some 10,000 who died in combat. Beyond the Spanish Civil War, "International Brigades" is also sometimes used interchangeably with the term foreign legion in reference to military units comprising foreigners who volunteer to fight in the military of another state, often in times of war. The Garibaldi Battalion (Garibaldi Brigade after April 1937) was a largely-Italian volunteer unit of the International Brigades that fought on the Republican side of the Spanish Civil War from October 1936 to 1938. Albanian People
The Albanians (; sq, Shqiptarët ) are an ethnic group and nation native to the Balkan Peninsula who share a common Albanian ancestry, culture, history and language. Skënder Luarasi
Skënder Luarasi (19 January 190027 April 1982) was an Albanian scholar, writer and anti-fascist activist. Life Luarasi was born in Luaras of Kolonjë region (back then Ottoman Empire, today's Albania) on 19 January 1900. He was the son of Albanian patriot Petro Nini Luarasi, descendant of the ''Kostallari'' family of the Luaras village, and Lino Sevo. Though Luarasi was a Protestant, he named his son ''Skënder'' to refer to the Albanian National Hero Scanderbeg. The poet Naim Frashëri was his godfather. Luarasi performed the first studies in Albanian-language schools of Negovan and Korçë (1909-1911). After the death of his father by poisoning, he was sent to Robert College of Istanbul (1912-1913). Asim Vokshi
Asim Vokshi (1909–1937) was an Albanians, Albanian Kosovo, Kosovar from Gjakova, Kosovo Vilayet, Ottoman Empire, and studied at a military academy in Italy. He served as a staff officer in the Garibaldi Battalion of the XII International Brigade during the Spanish Civil War. He is buried in the Cemetery of the Martyrs, Shkodër, Albania. Mehmet Ismail Shehu (January 10, 1913 – December 18, 1981) was an Albanian communist politician who served as the 23rd Prime Minister of Albania from 1954 to 1981.
